What is an MCP?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to external tools securely. In short: it gives your AI assistant the ability to interact with apps on your behalf.
Tally's MCP server uses this standard to give your AI assistant direct access to your Tally workspace and forms. Once connected, your assistant can:
- Create forms from a plain-language description
- Edit existing forms: add, remove, or update fields and settings
- Browse your workspace: list forms, search by name and organize
- Fetch submission data: to then analyze, visualize, and summarize it right inside the conversation

How do I set up the MCP connection?

Which AI assistants work with Tally's MCP?
Any MCP-compatible client works. This includes Claude (claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Claude Code), ChatGPT, Cursor, Windsurf, Zed, Cline, Continue, and any other tool that supports remote MCP servers.
Does Tally's MCP server support OAuth?
Yes. OAuth is the recommended authentication method. When you connect, you'll be redirected to Tally to authorize access to your workspace, no need to copy tokens or handle API keys manually.
Can the AI assistant delete my forms?
The assistant can edit and create forms, but it cannot delete forms or individual submissions.
Does the AI assistant see my respondents' data?
Only when you explicitly ask it to. If you run a query like "analyze my survey responses," the assistant fetches those submissions into the conversation to process them. Submissions are not pre-loaded or sent to the AI without a direct request.
How is this different from the Tally API?
The Tally API is designed for developers who want to integrate Tally into custom applications using code. MCP is designed for anyone who wants to manage forms through conversation with an AI assistant, no programming needed.
Why would I use Tally's MCP instead of building with the API?
MCP is faster for ad-hoc work: analyzing a survey, quickly building a form, pulling a specific slice of submissions. The API is better when you need to embed Tally inside another product or automate at scale.
