Membership Form of the Association for Human Mathematics

The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) protects mathematics as a human endeavor against the threat of artificial intelligence. We work to maintain the independence of the mathematical community from the encroachment of corporate interest. In light of the grave societal, environmental, and economic impacts of the AI industry and the threat of unfettered AI growth, we strive not to be complicit.

Artificial intelligence tools pose a fundamental threat to scientific practice and mathematical understanding. Mathematical progress requires human expertise, cultivated through writing and careful thinking. The automated production and consumption of mathematics thus undermines the intellectual foundations of our field. The goals of the companies which are developing these technologies are not aligned with the mathematical community; this industry has chosen mathematics to advertise the capabilities of their products, regardless of the consequences to our discipline. Mathematicians thus have an obligation to take action.

Mathematical institutions are especially vulnerable to disruption. The introduction of AI tools imperils undergraduate and graduate education. Journals are confronting an explosion in AI-coauthored submissions, and publication processes are in flux. Students are losing opportunities to gain the deep understanding expected of mathematicians. The AHM is organizing multiple working groups to provide policy proposals and tools to combat these problems.

Both individual action and large-scale coordination are needed to ensure that mathematicians engage critically with AI companies and their products. We represent mathematicians who share these values, and we invite these mathematicians to join our work.

Members should be members of the mathematics community, at the PhD student level or higher.

Membership Commitment

Membership in the Association for Human Mathematics is public. Members make the following general commitments as a part of joining the Association for Human Mathematics, with the understanding that they will make their collaborators aware of these commitments.

1. Members commit to not working with commercial AI companies by providing technical labor, mathematical knowledge, consultation, or publicity.

2. Members commit to not publishing mathematical texts (including papers, reviews, referee reports, lecture notes, teaching materials, and books) generated by AI models. Members only publish their own writing, as opposed to outputs of AI tools. We affirm that mathematical writing should have human authorship.

Members also have the option of signing onto the following public commitment and joining our AI-free caucus. We stand by our colleagues who choose not to use AI tools in their mathematical practice. In doing so, we affirm the inherent value of human mathematics.

3. Members of the AI-free caucus do not use AI models in a research capacity. Members of this caucus engage in core mathematical activities, such as finding proofs, exploring examples, and posing research questions, without prompting Al tools.

Working Groups

All members are encouraged to participate in a working group. Please consider the following options and choose any that interest you.

Organizing Committee. Coordinates the overall activities of the AHM, plans agendas for General Membership Meetings, trains organizers, and facilitates local organizing.

Communications Working Group: maintains the website, serves as a point of contact for journalists, publicizes positive developments, and comments on important cases of AI-related misconduct when appropriate.

Journals Working Group. Sample projects could include advising existing journals on how to protect human-made content, publicizing information on changing journal policies, or incubating new journals.

Preprints Working Group. Sample projects could include guiding policy on protecting preprints from being used as LLM training data and developing tools for authors to protect their manuscripts.

Careers Working Group. Sample projects could include guiding policy for departments with regard to hiring, promotion, and maintaining coherence of the job market.

Teaching Working Group. Sample projects could include developing AI-resistant methods for undergraduate and graduate education.

Coalitions Working Group. Sample projects could include outreach to professional organizations such as the AMS and pro-human academic organizations in other fields.

Feel free to suggest a new working group as well.
