MVP with Data: Building an Expert-Validated Index

Consultation Document and Weighting Survey for Elite Coaches

This document has a dual objective. First, it serves as a consultation base for you, as an elite coach, to value a set of performance metrics extracted from tracking and event data provided by FIFA from its World Cup. Second, your responses will feed into an aggregated Data-Based Most Valuable Player (MVP) model, built from the consensus of several coaches rather than criteria defined unilaterally by a single analyst.
The Methodological Challenge: Any data-based MVP index requires two subjective decisions: which metrics to include and how much each one weighs. If these decisions are made by a single person, the index inherits their bias even if the final calculation is mathematically "objective". This form shifts those decisions to a panel of expert coaches, so the final weight of each metric is the result of professional consensus rather than an analyst's intuition.
Background: This project stems from a previous experimental study where a data-driven MVP index was built for the Women's Euro based on personal criteria. That experience highlighted the central limitation this survey aims to correct: you can view the original work here (Spanish).
How your responses will be used: The weights assigned by each coach within a category will be averaged (and the dispersion between coaches will be reported as a measure of consensus or disagreement). The result will be a weighting system by category and by metric that will be applied to the real data of the tournament players.
1. General Instructions
The questionnaire is divided into 4 categories: Offensive Impact, Defensive Impact, Build-up and Game Control, and Physical Performance and Effort.
Within each category, distribute 100 points among the listed metrics according to the importance you give them for deciding who is the MVP. You can leave metrics at 0.
Metrics marked with an asterisk (*) are synthetic ratios proposed as composite indicators. Value them the same as the rest.
At the end of each category, you can propose one or more additional metrics.
Finally, you will be asked to distribute 100 points among the 4 main categories.
