Operations Director / Manager

A new organization building a broad-based movement to take on the AI industry seeks a dynamic Operations Director/Manager to lead the operations backbone necessary for us to turn anxiety, fear, and hope about AI into public mobilization and political power. This is an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a new and exciting movement, grow an organization, and help shape the future of AI.

Location: New York, NY or San Francisco, CA preferred; U.S. remote possible

Compensation: $130,000 - $170,000, plus fully covered health, dental, and vision for you and your family; 3% automatic 401(k) contribution; generous PTO

Role Note: We are open to hiring either an Operations Director or Manager. If a Manager, we expect you to partner more closely with our Chief of Staff to execute on your responsibilities and to be on the lower end of the compensation range.

About us

We are a new AI advocacy organization launching publicly in late summer 2026. Our goal is to amplify everyday voices and build a broad-based movement capable of winning federal AI policy. We want policies that create an economy that works for everyone, not just Big AI; that defend our essential freedoms; and that prevent the development of AI systems that pose existential risks to humans and the planet.

Public anxiety about AI is rising faster than almost any other political issue, and neither party has earned voters' trust on it. For years the response to AI risk has been white papers and closed-door meetings; what's been missing is organized grassroots political power. We are building the campaigns, organizing, and political infrastructure to win the future.

Our team includes veterans of the climate movement, civil rights organizations, national labor unions, and progressive electoral campaigns. You'd be building operations with real resources on an issue that is about to become unavoidable.

The role

The Operations Director/Manager owns the operations foundation that enables our movement. You ensure every team member, campaign, and volunteer has the infrastructure, tools, and processes needed to maximize our collective impact. We're looking for a driven builder who can design our operational systems from scratch, run them at a national scale, and build the organizational backbone needed to generate political power equal to the challenges AI poses.

Operations leadership. Help shape our strategy, initiatives, and organizational design to maximize the impact of our operational/financial resources and then set operating practices to efficiently execute our plans in the real world.

People operations. Enable us to identify, attract, empower, and retain the most talented team members by leading recruiting, general HR, performance management, and culture building.

Finance, legal, compliance. Support the entire lifecycle of our 501(c)(3) and (c)(4) entities, from financial forecasting and cash flow management to contract negotiation and advocacy compliance, including managing outside counsel and accounting/compliance vendors.

Infrastructure and general operations. Manage the build out of the tech infrastructure (AI tooling, CRM advocacy software, data security, and more) and operational muscle (trusted vendors, SOPs) needed to educate millions of members, organize nationwide actions, and ultimately win federal AI policies.

Who you are

We are a small team of experienced organizers, campaigners, and communicators with a big vision, and are looking for dynamic, motivated collaborators who can help build the organization's core functions. We don't expect anyone to check every box. If you meet most of this and the mission grabs you, apply:

6+ (Manager) / 10+ (Director) years of experience across operations, finance, legal / compliance, and HR / people operations, leading at least two of these functions.

You've built something. You've played a critical role in getting a new organization off the ground and/or building multiple operational systems from scratch.

501(c)(3) / (c)(4) fluency. You understand the intricacies of (c)(3) and (c)(4) nonprofit organizations and how to maintain compliance with a minimum of overhead.

Ready to get your hands dirty and lead. You're ready to dig in and do it yourself or manage a vendor for now and eventually build a small but mighty team around you.

Problem identifier and solver. You're known for being the person who sees around corners and who is the go-to person for solving a tough problem.

Excellent project management skills, with efficient time and workload management skills and orientation to detail.

Collaborative and respectful. Works well both independently and collaboratively; a track record of working with people across lines of difference, and engaging with diverse communities.

Consistently good judgment and integrity. You make sound calls with incomplete information, know when to move fast and when to slow down, and leadership can trust your decisions without reviewing every detail.

Excellent written and verbal communication. You can present complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Interest in AI policy. Deep expertise is great, but a willingness to learn is all that is required.
