"Queer as Faith" Interest

Being an LGBTQ+ person of faith can be challenging. Many religious spaces exclude LGBTQ+ people from participation, and reconciling our faith's practices and history with our gender and sexuality can feel like an impossible task. However, we are confident that our faith and our identities are not incompatible, and can in fact speak of Divinity in their own way.
Following the recent success of Prestwich Pride, Rev'd Cody Coyne (Minister of Cross Street Unitarian Chapel) and Rev'd Alia Shinbrough (Interim Minister at Monton Unitarians) wish to provide space for religious LGBTQ+ people to celebrate and explore their identities and faiths.
We are preparing a new group to support LGBTQ+ people of faith in Prestwich and Whitefield. Taking this survey will help us develop it in line with the needs of the local community.

Hi! I'm Cody, the minister at Cross Street Unitarian Chapel. I have lived in Prestwich and Whitefield for most of the past 20 years. My ministry in the city centre has involved the care and support of LGBTQ+ people, including performing same-sex weddings and providing pastoral support. I have been an active participant in Manchester's Interfaith scene, and am grateful for the insight this has given me.

Hi, I’m Rev. Alia, I’m an ordained Unitarian Universalist (UU) Minister, and my pronouns are they/them. My ministry has spanned the US and UK (since I moved mid-2025) in and out of UU contexts, and has taken root in summer camps, community centers, university campuses, congregations, and in institutional ministry. I’m currently serving a short-term contract as the Transition Minister with Monton Unitarian Church.
