How do you describe your leadership presence?

As a leader, I put company, people and myself in the following priority order:

I was promoted to the boss because I am most knowledgeable an have the right answers

I don't mind when someone shares their point of view but I am confident enough to go with my own decision

I solicit the input of others and encourage different points of view when making all important decisions

When it comes to decision-making, I have the following perspective:

Engage my team and small group discussions so we can connect the company strategy to the specific work they're doing.

Wait for the one-pager that marketing creates and email that to my team so they understand first hand with the CEO thinks of the strategy of the company

Work with all levels of management below me to ensure the strategy is understood and then personalize discussions by team explaining how their goals directly support our company mission

When sharing the mission of the company and critical priorities to be accomplished in the next year to support it, I:

Accept my responsibility and explain my failure as a lesson learned to share with others

I get anxious because as the boss it doesn't look good when I am not perfect

I tried to pinpoint who created the confusion and caused me not to have the right information in the 1st place

Mistakes happen in the workplace, and when I have had a hand, and something goes wrong, I:

I am present in that moment an actively engage in the conversation

I stop what I am doing to give them my attention but my mind often wanders to all the things I should be doing

I let them share what is going on while I continue answering emails because I have learned to be good at multitasking

When an employee pops into my office unannounced to discuss something on their mind:

Sharing my background and what I have done the last year to demonstrate to the company that I am a team player

Giving them the flexibility as they need it to manage priorities in their personal and home life

Making a personal connection with them and learning what excites and motivates them about their work

“People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care”. I show I care by:

Suggesting resources such as e-learning, books and mentorships that can support them in their professionalism and general career development

Sharing my philosophy on career progress and then letting them find what they think is worth their investment of time and effort

Asking them about their career goals and helping to personalize a development plan that supports their specific career aspirations

I encourage the growth and development of my team by:

Tell it to them straight, even the fact that I don't agree with what is going on at the top

Explain the situation, what considerations were taken into account and solicit any questions they may have

Share only what my boss told me to share and don't go “off script”

When faced with communicating tough news to my team, I:

Acknowledging their progress and finding opportunities to recognize small wins along the way

Reminding them that this is a “pay for performance” culture and we don't celebrate until we have crossed the finish line

Checking in on progress against key milestones to make sure they are clear on how far they still have to go

As a leader, I keep my teams motivated by:

I am open to expressing how I am feeling about the work to be done and share what I am holding myself accountable to as we work together to achieve the company goals

I don't show any signs of emotion so I don't appear weak or that I can't handle my job as the boss

I acknowledge the situation at hand and share practical steps on how they can balance their personal feelings with what needs to be done for the business
