Paul Vickers is a passionate music educator, educational leader, consultant and coach. He is driven by a passion for developing high performance teams and deeply committed learning cultures. Paul loves seeing others succeed in their own pursuit of excellence.
As a conductor, Paul has twenty-five years’ experience conducting school ensembles of various ability and ages across all educational sectors. He has played his part in a range of music education teams, and has led from the front in significant school music programs since 2003. Most recently, Paul spent nearly ten years as Director of Music at the Scots College, Sydney; a music program transformed by the team under his leadership. Paul remains the conductor of the College’s Symphony Orchestra, and the Year 7 Wind Band.
In universities, Paul has conducted a range of ensembles in Australia and Canada. Since 2018, he has been the conductor and musical director of the Wind Symphony at the University of NSW, where he has also lectured in Music Education. Previously, Paul was the Assistant Conductor for the University of Victoria Wind Symphony in British Columbia, Canada while he completed there a Master of Music degree in conducting. Paul’s tertiary qualifications also include a Bachelor of Music Studies (Performance) on trombone from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and a Graduate Diploma in Education.
From 2001 – 2007, Paul was an ensemble conductor with The Arts Unit of the NSW Department of Education. He has been a core conductor for the Symphony Services International conductor training program, conducting professional orchestras in Australia and New Zealand, and is a regular contributor to professional journals, boards and advisory panels in music education. Paul is also an experienced adjudicator, speaker, clinician and guest conductor across orchestral, wind band and jazz genres, and is regularly sought after in these roles.
Paul has also held a number of senior and executive educational leadership roles outside of Music Education. He currently oversees a school campus as the Head of Middle School at The Scots College, Sydney, where he has previously been Director of College Improvement and Director of Co-Curricular Activities.
