Principal Data Scientist

Gemini Sports Analytics' mission is to make it easier for sports teams to make data-driven decisions. Our self-service AI Cloud application empowers stakeholders at teams to answer more questions faster to optimize talent identification and development, tactics, and player health & performance.
Position Overview: 
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Data Scientist to join our team and play a critical role in driving evolution of our business. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise in machine learning and predictive analytics along with a deep understanding of the sports industry. Reporting to the CEO, this individual will build bespoke data science projects, lead and manage a team of data scientists and engineers, and collaborate closely with other departments to provide technical leadership and support.
Responsibilities:

1. Strategic Direction and Project Management:
- Provide strategic guidance on project prioritization and development plans.
- Lead the development and execution of data science initiatives aligned with company goals
2. Customer and Team Engagement:
- Collaborate with high-leverage customers to design, co-build, implement data science projects within the GSA web application.
- Mentor and project manage junior Data Science and Engineering team members.
- Develop and showcase high-impact projects to demonstrate GSA product value and drive commercial development.
3. Scalability, Documentation, Collaboration:
- Enhance system development by engaging our customers with new features.
- Create comprehensive technical documentation to ensure smooth onboarding and usage.
- Gain an in-depth technical understanding of our platform partners and system architecture.
- Liaise closely with the product team to provide feedback on tooling to enhance customer experience.
Qualifications:
1. Technical Expertise:
- Strong background in machine learning with a demonstrated ability to architect and execute complex data projects.
- Proficiency in relevant programming languages (e.g., Python, R) and data manipulation tools.
- Previous experience with sports data and analytics, ideally across multiple sports.
- Experience with tools such as Data Robot, Databricks, and/or Snowflake OR similar products (Sagemaker, GCP, Azure ML, Dataiku) are preferred.
2. Leadership, Communication, and Personality:
- Proven track record of leading and managing data science teams.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and customers.
- Strong tolerance for pivots and changing responsibilities. Willingness to roll up sleeves and be helpful wherever benefits the business. Intrinsically motivated, curious, and energetic.
- Curiosity about, and appreciation for, AI Cloud and ML Automation platforms
3. Strategic Thinking:
- Ability to envision and articulate the strategic direction of data services within the company.
- Capable of guiding project prioritization and aligning data initiatives with business objectives.
4. Customer Focus:
- Experience working directly with commercial customers or stakeholders, tailoring data solutions to meet their unique needs.
- Ability to provide technical support and insights during customer interactions.
