Job application - Operator, Apprentice

About the Role

The Operator plays a key supporting role in maintaining the organization, safety, and operational readiness of the laboratory environment. This individual is responsible for ensuring that lab supplies, consumables, and equipment are properly stocked, prepared, and maintained to support daily research activities. 

Working closely with lab staff, the Operator helps uphold laboratory standards by performing routine operational tasks, maintaining cleanliness and order across workspaces, and ensuring that essential materials and safety resources are available when needed. This role is ideal for someone who is organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a hands-on laboratory setting.

Here’s What You’ll do:
* Monitor ethanol stock levels and refill ethanol jugs and bottles as needed. 
* Restock consumables and supplies on shelves in the main laboratory. 
* Ensure sanitizing solution mats are filled and maintained daily. 
* Maintain adequate stock of weigh boats at the media preparation bench. 
* Remove and replace sharps containers when full and ensure proper disposal procedures are followed. 
* Organize and maintain lab coats by size on the lab coat rack. 
* Stock media plates on wire shelving in the main lab. 
* Rinse glassware and prepare items for transport to the upstairs dishwasher. 
* Prepare glassware for autoclaving and support sterilization workflows. 
* Empty the autoclave water tray and ensure equipment is ready for use. 
* Charge pipettors to ensure availability for lab staff. 
* Check and restock Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) supplies as needed. 
* Monitor dataloggers and ensure they are functioning properly. 
* Verify that fire exits, safety showers, and emergency pathways remain unobstructed. 
* Check that spill kits are fully stocked and ready for emergency use. 
* Receive and organize incoming packages and coordinate internal deliveries. 
*Maintain organization and cleanliness of lab benches and common laboratory spaces.
Education and Qualifications: • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate degree or relevant coursework preferred). • Availability to work 40 hours per week. • Comfortable working in a laboratory environment following safety procedures. • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and maintain cleanliness standards. • Reliable and able to perform routine operational tasks consistently.
