Founded in the early 1970s by a group of Black golfers from East Palo Alto and Menlo Park, the Spear Golf Club began as a small circle of local business leaders, educators, and professionals who gathered at Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course to share their love of the game. The club took its name and spirit from “The Spear & The Arrow,” a local East Palo Alto nightclub where the founding members first met to organize — a name inspired by the African liberation symbol representing courage and unity. In time, the club grew, welcomed women golfers, and became part of both the Western States Golf Association (WSGA) and later the NCGA.
