Bootlegs

Applications close Sunday 26 April 2026

Bootlegs invites artists to explore fan art and fan fiction through the lens of print. Drawing on the deviant logic of reproduction, remix and circulation that sits at the heart of printmaking, the exhibition leans into spirit of the bootleg. Whether drawing from video games, movies and TV, books, comics or art history, the exhibition reclaims works made in admiration, obsession and creative play.

Fan art subcultures have grown into massive, interconnected communities. Since long before the shadow of AI slop, these online groups have provided spaces for creative expression by marginalised and alternative voices, particularly women and queer creators, to retell stories and reimagine shared universes online.  From zines and posters to editions and multiples, Bootlegs celebrates the fan-made as both homage and creative resistance.

This exhibition is free for all artists to participate. You are invited to contribute one work that incorporates print - including traditional print media, hybrid/digital prints, or written fan fic with the humble office printer.  Anyone can join, simply sign up as a Megalo member or become a Friend of Megalo.
