Journal Description

Contours is a project based at the McGill Faculty of Law that aims to map and shape the contours of debates, experiences, concerns, and aspirations through written and artistic exploration of the intersection of gender, sexuality, race, and law. Founded in 2012, the student-run magazine is a space for marginalized voices and an invitation for us all to start a conversation. Contours is published annually and welcomes contributions in English and French from students and faculty.

Nous accueillions des réponses argumentatives et émotionnelles, théoriques et expérientielles, par écrit et de l’art, parce que nous croyons que toutes ces formes d’expression sont utiles pour développer notre compréhension des intersections entre l’identité et le droit à différents niveaux.

Last year, Florence Mercat, Meera Khanna, and a dedicated group of students took on the exciting challenge of restoring the journal's voice. With the successful launch of Volume XI, that first mission is complete!

Aujourd’hui, nous bâtissons l'équipe 2026-2027 pour poursuivre sur cette lancée. Les bases étant solidement rétablies, notre objectif est d'élargir la portée de Contours, notamment par l'organisation d'événements et de panels, et de faire rayonner cette revue unique au sein de notre Faculté de droit.

Pour cette année académique, nous recrutons pour onze (11) positions.
All members of Contours are encouraged to submit their own works to the journal throughout their mandate.
General requirements There are no prerequisites or formal experience required for any position. We encourage you to apply for the role that feels like the best fit for you. Whether you are a 1L, 2L, 3L, or 4L, all students are welcome to join our team!
POSITIONS AVAILABLE
VP Finance/Admin Director
The VP Finance/Administrative Director manages the financial and operational aspects of the journal. Responsibilities include preparing and maintaining the budget, reviewing and approving funding requests, selecting cost-effective printing services, and overseeing general administrative tasks to ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
In addition to attending mandatory finance meetings, they oversee the managers in organizing at least one event per semester to promote Contours and the journal’s theme, while also securing external funding to support club activities and recruitment efforts.
Creative Director (Executive position)
The Creative Director leads the artistic vision of the club’s publications, ensuring that visual elements, graphics, and creative content complement the journal’s articles and themes.
They manage the integration of these elements into both the print and digital versions of the journal, supporting the editorial team in bringing creative projects to life.
English/French Editors
Each editor is strongly encouraged to contribute to the journal by writing a piece or submitting an existing work for publication, as Contours primarily relies on submissions from members of the Faculty
Editors also play a critical role in maintaining the quality and consistency of the journal by reviewing submissions, whether from colleagues or external contributors, for grammar, syntax, and citation accuracy. They provide feedback to writers, recommend which pieces should be published, and ensure that the editorial process stays on track with deadlines, collaborating closely with the Editor in Chief.
Bilingual Managers
The Bilingual Managers play a key role in bringing the journal and its authors to the spotlight. They organize and coordinate events that celebrate the work of contributors and highlight the unique voice of Contours. By ensuring each event runs smoothly and aligns with school guidelines, they help maintain the club’s visibility, and influence.
Creative Editors
Creative Editors are responsible for producing and curating the creative content that enriches the journal, from podcast episodes to visual artwork. They oversee the creation of social media posts, engage with followers, and contribute to the design and formatting of both print and digital editions. They collaborate closely with the editorial team, ensuring the club's creative projects align with its mission.
