Thank you for your interest in An Introduction to Playwriting.

The Joy Offensive is excited to offer a 10-week program for writers beginning to write plays. This project is part of Council's Cultural Connections Program, showcasing diversity in the arts.
The program is led by playwright and dramaturg, Jules Orcullo and is rooted in values transparency. By the program's end, participants should have a deeper appreciation of their distinct approaches, understanding of their form, and tools for building inclusive, respectful artistic communities.

Your application

Tell us about your journey to (and through) playwriting?

If you have a background in theatre, writing for performance, or other storytelling or artistic practices, include any training, presented works, artist and new works development.

What excites you most about writing for theatre and live performance?

Give examples of the kinds of theatre and live performance experiences you enjoy or are drawn to. Which elements of theatre, textures, phenomena, or ideas are you most keen to explore in your writing? What stories are you interested in telling?

An Introduction to Playwriting is invested in diversity and cultural access. Please describe your identity, community affiliations, and/or lived experience.

e.g. I am a young, Danish prince studying at Wittenberg University. I have access to the structural privileges of the Danish aristocracy. I also have experience of complex mental health, political violence, and culturally sanctioned family violence.

e.g. I'm a student. My Dad's Black and my Mom's Puerto Rican. We live in Brooklyn. Recently, I was bitten by a spider that gave me some new ... abilities. Since then I've travelled into ... across ... beyond different dimensions (?) but I don't know what that means for me or my future. Because I don't actually know what the word future means.

Upload a writing sample

Please submit a 5 page sample of your writing.
There are no rules or guidelines for formatting but the sample should be written for theatre or live performance.
You should upload an example of your most distinctive work, or a sample from the work you are most excited about writing.

I confirm that the uploaded sample is my own work
