Why this role exists

Jefit is the strength-training app for serious lifters. 15+ years in market, profitable, and in the middle of the biggest repositioning in the company's history: from "workout tracker" to the most intelligent training platform. The product anchor is our mesocycle-driven adaptive training engine - multi-week programs that learn from each lifter's logged performance and write their next training block.
That repositioning is a design problem as much as an engineering one. An adaptive system that nobody can feel adapting is just a database. We are hiring a designer to make the intelligence legible - to turn a progression engine into an experience that feels like coaching.
You would be one of a small number of designers on a compact cross-functional team, working directly with the CEO, product, and engineering. There is no design-by-committee here and no layer between you and the decision. Your work ships to hundreds of thousands of people who train every week.

What you will design

- The adaptive training experience - how a lifter sees their program adapt, understands why it changed, and trusts it enough to follow it. This is the highest-leverage surface in the product.
- Progression and insight dashboards - making strength progress readable at a glance, across wildly different training styles (barbell, bodyweight, home, machine-only).
- Onboarding and activation - the first ten minutes decide whether someone becomes a lifter who logs. We iterate on this constantly and measure everything.
- The design system - Jefit runs on iOS, Android, Watch, and web. Consistency across them is an ongoing build, not a finished artifact.
- An AI-assisted design workflow. See below - this is the thing we most want from this hire.

The part we care most about: AI in your design process

Every engineer here ships faster because Claude Code is genuinely in their loop - not as a novelty, as infrastructure. We want the same transformation on the design side, and we want the person we hire to be the one who drives it.
Concretely, we are interested in designers who are actively working out how AI changes the end-to-end design process: using Claude (or equivalent) to move from a rough problem statement to structured flows, edge-case inventories, and content variants before opening Figma; generating and pressure-testing interface directions fast enough that you explore ten instead of two; building clickable, real-data prototypes without waiting on an engineer; turning research notes, support tickets, and store reviews into synthesized insight instead of a backlog you never get to; and having actual opinions about where these tools produce slop, and what you do about it.
You do not need to have all of this figured out. Almost nobody does - the practice is a year old. What we are screening for is whether you are seriously working on it: real experiments, real opinions, real assessment of what worked and what did not. A designer who has been deliberately rebuilding their process for six months beats one with a polished portfolio and no curiosity.
What does not clear the bar: "I use ChatGPT to write copy sometimes," or Midjourney moodboards as the whole story.

What we are looking for

- Shipped real product design. Consumer app or product UI that real users actually use - in the App Store, on Google Play, or on the web at scale. We care far more about what you have shipped than years on a resume.
- Strong interaction and visual craft. You can hold a design system together, you have real typographic judgment, and your mobile work looks native to its platform rather than a web page in a phone frame.
- Product thinking, not just screens. You frame the problem before drawing, you know what metric your design is supposed to move, and you have watched real users fail to use something you made and fixed it.
- Genuine AI-in-the-design-loop practice, or a serious and demonstrable effort to build one. This is the single most important non-craft skill we screen for.
- Fluency in Figma - components, variants, auto-layout, tokens, and a handoff engineers do not have to interrogate.
- At least one tenure of 18+ months somewhere. We are looking for someone who commits and ships.
- Willingness to work full-time in our San Jose office, 5 days a week. Not remote, not hybrid.

Strongly preferred

- Startup-mode experience. Small team, multiple hats, tradeoff calls under constraint.
- A portfolio with outcomes in it. Not just "here is the redesign" - what changed, what you learned, what you would do differently.
- Fitness, health, or consumer-subscription domain experience. Bonus for behavior change, streaks, habit formation, or subscription conversion.
- Enough technical fluency to prototype. You do not need to ship production code.

The Jefit Note

Two of the questions ahead ask you to write a few paragraphs: a time you took extreme ownership of a design problem, and how you are using AI in your design process today. Be specific. If you are early in this, say so and tell us what you are actively trying - an honest account of an in-progress practice is worth more to us than a polished one that is not true.
This is not a creative-writing exercise. It is the fastest way for us to tell whether you would thrive here, and we respond to every applicant who submits a Jefit Note.

Base salary: $110,000 - $115,000
