Community Member Survey

We want to make it easy for more volunteers and community members to plug into the great work that is already being done on the ground. Many people are new to organizing and not sure where to start. Hands off NJ is focused on three key areas: creating a centralized hub to provide access to trusted resources in multiple languages, provide whistles and whistle kits to communities and organizations, and developing KYR trainings for businesses and service providers. This survey can help us to better understand what your community is facing, how we can best support you and connect you, and what resources might be most useful to develop or share.

WHY THIS SURVEY MATTERS RIGHT NOW 

ICE and DHS have dramatically escalated enforcement in cities across NJ like Jersey City, Avenel, Bound Brook, Manville, Bridgeton and Atlantic City. More than half of those arrested have no criminal convictions. Roxbury is fighting back against an ICE warehouse in their community.

In Minneapolis, federal agents killed two U.S. citizens in January 2026 -- Renee Good (Jan. 7) and Alex Pretti (Jan. 24) -- during Operation Metro Surge, the largest immigration enforcement operation in U.S. history. Video evidence directly contradicted official government accounts of both shootings. These are not isolated incidents.

New Jersey is fighting back: Gov. Sherrill issued an executive order barring ICE from state property. Newark, Jersey City, and Hudson County have done the same. The federal government is now suing New Jersey. The NJ Legislature has advanced bills on masking, sanctuary protections, and immigrant data privacy.

Hands Off NJ exists to connect, resource, and amplify the people already doing this work and to build the defense networks our communities urgently need.
