Walk On The Wild Side

A Guided Walk of London's Soho Exploring Music, History and Culture

On Saturday 11 October, join us for a guided walk where the route, the stories, and the soundtrack respond to the people in the group and the moment we’re in.

This isn’t a set tour or a fixed playlist. Think of it like jazz: we have our favourite riffs and well-loved tales, but the journey takes shape as we go. If someone wants to explore punk’s roots, we’ll follow that lead. If a street corner sparks a memory, we’ll pause there. If a conversation drifts from 18th-century masquerades to 1970s reggae, we’ll make the jump.

Over the past three years, our themed Soho walks have explored Music & Migration, Music & Politics, How Soho Invented the Modern World and more. But we’ve always found the best moments happen when we respond to what excites the group in the moment. This walk is built entirely on that principle – no theme, no set route, just curiosity and conversation. Our walks dovetail with a whole archive of researched stories that we have published on Substack.

What you might hear about
The haunts of jazz exiles and punk pioneers.
The story of the real Mack the Knife.
Where Hey Jude and Walk On The Wild Side were both recorded.
The home of Goth and Alternative Comedy.
The single mother scoring films from a Wardour Street basement.
Costermongers and calypso, Marx and Marc.

We began these walks in 2021 with a hand-drawn map, a Spotify playlist, and the idea that music was an ideal way of exploring Soho's rich history. People loved the mix of history, music, and conversation – and the way each walk could take unexpected turns. Since then, hundreds have joined us, each leaving with a souvenir map, a playlist, and some stories.

What to expect on 11 October
Stories you won’t find on the plaques – and some that deserve one.
A pace that lets you look up, take it in, and talk about it.
A map and Spotify playlist to take home so you can keep walking Soho in your head.
A small group, so there’s no shouting over traffic – just shared space and shared stories.
