What is a home, heritage and community language in the UK?
A HHCL is a language which is usually used and learned at home, within the community or in faith settings (e.g. Arabic, Polish, Urdu). Since A Levels in commonly-taught curricular languages (e.g. French, German, Spanish) and in indigenous UK languages (e.g. English, Gaelic, Irish, Welsh) are widely accepted in university admissions processes, we do not consider them as HHCLs for the purposes of this Toolkit.
This Toolkit applies to all HHCLs in which pupils in the UK can take an A Level: i.e. Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Mandarin), Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Panjabi, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Urdu.
