FRANK Fair Pay Calculator

Developed by Fatos Ustek, Celina Loh and Anne Hardy.

FRANK Fair Pay Calculator is developed to provide clarity and awareness to the working relationship between artists and commissioning bodies, with the goal to deviate from pre-assigned lump sums or non-existent fees for artists.

How to use the FRANK Fair Pay Calculator

1. Start the FRANK Fair Pay Calculator FRANK Fair Pay Calculator identifies 10 stages of artistic involvement in a project, including Invitation, Pre-production, Production, Installation & Deinstallation, Communications & Marketing, Shipping & Packing, Debrief and Admin. You will encounter a series of initial questions. Depending on your responses, the FRANK Fair Pay Calculator will direct you to other relevant sections, skipping some questions entirely.

2. Types of questions For each relevant stage, you will be asked to either: • select the appropriate option that applies to your project or
• input the estimated number of days required for a task - think about the scale of project and how long you have spent on similar tasks in the past to guide your estimation.

3. Guidance Some questions include guidance to assist you in your calculations or prompt you to consider aspects involved in your collaboration.

4. Total project days FRANK Fair Pay Calculator will automatically calculate the days needed for all applicable stages to give you the total estimated number of days required for the project. FRANK Fair Pay Calculator does not generate a day rate nor it does estimate a fee for the artist for the work required. Instead, the FRANK Fair Pay Calculator supports artists and commissioning bodies negotiate fair remuneration based on the professionalism, labour and energy incurred in the collaboration.  FRANK encourages artists and commissioning bodies to identify the artist fee in a transparent conversation. Both parties are expected to work together in assessing the levels of fairness in the remuneration for the work that is required.
