You are invited to participate in a research study on whether a streak-based challenge, combined with messages about the risks of sleep deprivation and the benefits of sufficient rest, can influence university students’ phone use before bedtime. This study is conducted by Phone Sleeps First, a Final Year Project campaign group, Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI), Nanyang Technological University.
This study will take approximately 30 minutes of your time across multiple days. You will first complete a pre-challenge survey on your sleep attitudes, bedtime procrastination, daytime fatigue, and your motivation and barriers to reducing phone use before bed. Next, you will join one or more of the streak-based challenge phases (3, 5, or 7 nights) and submit daily check-ins of your smartphone screentime between 10 pm and 6 am. After completing the challenge, you will complete a post-challenge survey. Approximately 500 university students will be recruited for this research.
Your participation in this study is completely voluntary, and you have the right to withdraw from the study at any time without any penalty. You may skip any questions you do not wish to answer. If you do not wish to complete this survey, just close your browser.
Your participation in this research will be kept confidential, and data will be averaged and reported in aggregate. Your responses will be anonymous and IP addresses will not be collected to guarantee complete anonymity. Possible outlets of dissemination may be through our social media posts reporting overall data findings. Although your participation in this research may not benefit you personally, it will help us understand how university students in Singapore use their phone before bed, their attitudes towards reducing their smartphone screentime before bed and whether small interventions through highlighting both the risks of sleep deprivation and the benefits of sufficient rest, will help reduce their phone usage before bed. This knowledge may help guide further research on sleep health and digital wellness in Singapore. You will be compensated via $5 Grab vouchers for the time and effort taken to participate in the study (Limited to first 50 completions). It will be paid through email or Telegram.
Although there are minimal risks, you may feel some discomfort from monitoring your phone use and concerns over sharing smartphone screentime data.
