GRAFT Issue No. 1: Translanguaging* (Spring 2026)

*a term coined by sociolinguist Li Wei, meaning the fluid practice of moving between languages to create meaning and foster connection across communities in an integrated language system, rather than code switching where the boundaries of languages are rigid and separative.

In memory of the Oldenborg Center and celebration of the CGE.

Welcome to the submission portal for our first official publication.

As Claremont expands its global initiatives and inaugurates the new Center for Global Engagement (CGE), this issue honors the linguistic plurality that already defines the 7Cs. While commemorating the Oldenborg center and celebrating the CGE, we are seeking works that embodies the spirit of Oldenborg and CGE and multilingual center around 7Cs: translanguaging — writing that moves across, between, and within languages; that reflects on migration, hybridity, translation, and cultural encounter; that inhabits more than one linguistic world at once.

We invite submissions from students across the Claremont Colleges in any genre, including:

- Poetry

- Fiction

- Creative nonfiction

- Scholarly or critical essays - Hybrid or experimental work

We especially welcome:

- Creative work written partially or entirely in languages other than English

- Pieces that intentionally blend multiple languages

- Essays about language, linguistics, translation, diaspora, or cultural exchange

- Work that reflects Claremont Colleges' growing global engagement

- Memories of experience in the Oldenborg center

English-language submissions engaging with questions of language, culture, and global identity are welcome as well!

If you are already writing an Oldenborg story for Pomona's Dear Oldenborg program, you can still develop your story and submit it to us (in non-English would be preferred)!
