Chicks & Layers Waitlist // Penner Mini Farms
We currently have 2 different breeding pairings set up:
ISA Brown hens x Rhode Island Red rooster (brown eggs - "Penner Browns")
California White hens x Leghorn rooster (white eggs - "Penner Whites")
When you purchase baby chicks or laying hens from us, you're not only investing in a healthy and joyful future raising chickens and getting backyard eggs for your family, but you are also supporting sustainable farming practices that prioritize animal welfare.
We do expect to sell out of our baby chicks and laying hens, so be sure to get on our "first come, first serve" waitlist below!
We will reach out to our waitlist with more info, in the order of interest received :)
Do you have baby chicks / laying hens available for pickup today?
We hatch eggs 2-3 times throughout the year, so possibly yes, but also very possibly not right now.
Please refer to the top section of this page marked "Tentative Hatching Dates" to see the next planned hatching dates, and/or sign up for the waitlist below and we will reach out to let you know what/when we may have what you're looking for!
I have a broody hen. Do you have eggs I can have her hatch?
Yes! We have roosters with our hens year round, so we do have fertilized eggs for hatching available, depending on how many you need. It might take a week or two to collect them, but please sign up below and we can get started!
Do I have to get rid of my old birds before I can bring home some new chicks?
There is no right or wrong answer, it just really depends on what you prefer!
If your older flock is still of laying age and you'd like to keep them around longer, it is a great idea to have them help raise the young birds to teach them any good habits they may already have.
EX: if they're already good layers and know their way around the nesting box, they can easily teach the young girls how to manage that.
(however, they may also have some bad habits that you'd rather not be carried over...)
So if you'd rather start out with a clean slate and just the young chicks, and if you're around the Lincoln area, there is a weekly sale barn at
Palmyra Livestock Market on Saturdays where you can take your old flock to try and hopefully find a new home for them.
What are "straight run" chicks?
We sell all baby chicks as "straight run" meaning they are unsexed at hatching so you will likely get a mixture of males and females.
Can you guarantee I will get pullets (females)?
The only way for us to personally guarantee you to receive females is to offer you laying hens. We can of course give our best guess for any baby chicks on whether or not they are male or female when asked, but in the end the only guarantee on our side is when a pullet starts laying eggs.
How many laying hens will you have for each batch?
There is no way to know for certain, so we only accept a certain amount of reservations for laying hens per batch so that we can almost guarantee we will have that many layers available.
In the rare occasion that we would hatch more males than females for a particular batch and were unable to fulfill the amount of layers reserved, we would then process all necessary refunds for any deposits received and could not be fulfilled (we choose to be very conservative with our numbers so as to prevent this from ever happening!).
