MARS 3.0 Mentor Application

MARS 3.0, Cambridge AI Safety Hub's research program, is looking for mentors to guide research projects from July 7th to mid-late September 2025. Please apply as soon as possible -- while we are officially accepting mentor applications until May 18th, we review applications on a rolling basis and encourage early submissions. For context, we aim to finish the participant applications phase, including the mentor application stage by June 16th. More information for mentors available here.

MARS connects promising researchers with experienced mentors to pursue AI safety projects in both technical and policy domains. As a mentor, you'll guide a small team working on a focused research project of your choosing. We expect most applicants to be current students, but we also aim to expand the applicant pool to working professionals, especially to reach individuals with expertise in Cybersecurity or Hardware Engineering.

The program starts with an intensive in-person week in Cambridge (July 7th-13th), followed by a ~10 week remote research period. During the in-person week, accommodation provided and travel costs reimbursed up to ~$400 for mentors. It is our strong preference that mentors attend the in-person component, but it is not a dealbreaker.

What we look for in mentors:

- Moderate to advanced experience in AI safety research or policy

- Well-scoped project ideas suitable for a 3-month timeline

- Commitment to weekly meetings and clear research guidance

- Nice to have: we are especially interested to hear from prospective mentors in AI Security or Compute Governance.

Benefits include:

- $30/hour compensation

- Travel support and accommodation for Cambridge week

- A team of high-potential AI safety researchers to assist you with a project of your selection
- Access to the Cambridge AI safety community, including networking opportunities
