Noe Music Piano Usage Policy

We are delighted to make our fine Steinway Model D Concert Grand Piano (NY) available to professional and community groups in San Francisco. Please carefully read and sign this agreement, which is designed to keep the piano at top concert readiness.

GENERAL POLICY — STEINWAY MODEL D USE & MAINTENANCE

All pianists, performers, and users must be familiar with this policy.

Authorized renters are responsible for anyone (e.g. students, guest artists) using the piano under their rental agreement, and are liable for any damages—accidental, negligent, reckless, or intentional—caused by themselves or their agents, employees, or invitees.

USAGE RULES

• No food or drink (including water) on or near the piano. This includes all containers, open or closed.

• Keep all objects off the piano lid (open, closed, or covered).

• Do not attempt to retrieve lost items from inside the piano. Contact Noe Music if needed.

• Report broken strings or any technical issues to Noe Music immediately.

• The keyboard will be locked/unlocked by the Ministry event manager at the start and end of your rental time.

CARE OF THE PIANO

The piano is regularly maintained and tuned. Additional tunings may be scheduled in advance (for a fee) through Noe Music’s approved technician. Users must leave the piano clean and in the condition it was found.

• Only Noe Music’s approved technician may access the piano interior.

• Report any mechanical issues or accidents immediately.

• Keep the bench firmly on the ground; do not put stress on the legs.

• Use extreme caution when opening or closing the lid — it is very heavy!

• Always replace the padded cover after use. When not in use, fold neatly on a chair or table to keep it clean.

To close the piano:

1️⃣ Lower and push back the music rack.

2️⃣ Wipe the keys with a soft cloth or towel.

3️⃣ Carefully close the lid and fallboard.

4️⃣ Replace the black padded cover.

All accidents, damage, or potential damage must be reported immediately — including unauthorized moves, scrapes, fallboard or lid issues, broken strings, or any unusual incident.

MOVING THE PIANO

The piano may only be moved with assistance from the Noe Valley Ministry event manager. Take great care to avoid contact with walls or moldings. Any bumps, scrapes or impacts must be reported immediately. Under no circumstances should the piano’s wheels come within 12 inches of the stage edge.

EXTENDED TECHNIQUES PERFORMANCE POLICY

Extended Techniques involve sound production by means other than (or in addition to) playing the keys and pedals — such as strumming, bowing, or striking strings or the case.

Allowed without prior approval:

• Plucking, striking, or strumming steel strings only (not copper bass strings) with clean, dry fingers and fingernails.

• Marking dampers, agraffes, or strings using sticky-note paper or Post-It flags only.

Requires prior approval:

• Any structural changes, including removing the lid or case parts (except the music desk).

• Any attachment of materials to strings or soundboard.

• Any “prepared piano” techniques (e.g. works by John Cage).

Consult Noe Music in advance for approval of any such use.

I have read, understood, and agree to abide by the Noe Music Piano Usage Policy. I accept full responsibility for ensuring compliance by all individuals under my supervision or rental.
