Volume G: Glue Auditions

Volume G in the UPPERCASE Encyclopedia of Inspiration is entitled "Glue." It will feature artists, designers and craftspeople who use collage and assemblage in their work.

Though “Glue” is the title, we are exploring all manner of mediums and methods that artists use to hold it all together. Some examples include paper collage with hand-painted papers, collages made with found ephemera, taped paper constructions, sculptures held together with wood glue and nails, mosaics grouted to a surface, art posters wheat-pasted in an urban environment, textile art using fusible adhesive and stitching… beyond traditional collage, we are looking for an eclectic variety of interpretations on how creative works can be held together.

Auditions to be considered for inclusion in this volume are open through February 5, 2025.
The entry fee is $100. All entrants will receive one copy of the finished book, regardless of their publication status. Selected entrants will receive four complimentary copies of the book upon publication. There are no additional fees or remuneration for participation.
Publication of this volume is planned for 2025.

How is your personality and/or your personal values reflected in your creations?

Creativity & Inspiration

What mindset or attitude do you think is best for making a collage or assemblage?

What message or mood are you hoping to convey with your work? Are there recurring themes or an area of focus?

What motivates and inspires you? How do you stay inspired?

Do any particular ideas, objects or activities—outside of and unrelated to collage—inform and inspire your collage practice? Are there other genres of art, materials, or processes of making outside of collage that come into play for your collage work?

How does your art impact you or others? What effect does this work have on your mental and/or physical health?

Process & Craft

Much of collage and assemblage begins in the materials that are collected and layered together. Tell us about your choice of materials and why they’re your preference.

How do you source your materials?

When using found materials and imagery, how do you ensure that what you create is truly your own?

What is your process in making new work, from initial idea to finished piece? What techniques do you use? Do you employ any unique or interesting processes?

How do you know when a piece is “finished”?

How do you hold it all together? What kind of glue, adhesive or technique do you employ in your craft?

What is your favourite tool and why?

Does sustainability inform your process? How so?

Please describe your workspace or studio setup.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your work or your practice?

Artwork / Photographs

Books in the Encyclopedia series are highly visual with quality imagery.
You do not have to take new photographs—you can use images from your archive. Please provide a variety of images, including finished work as well as process shots, details, and close-ups. Include images of your workspace or studio if applicable. Please include at least one photo of you. Include any images that might enhance or reference your answers provided above. Biggest is best when it comes to files for print publication. High-resolution files are preferred, but you can provide the biggest file size you have. Photos from a phone are typically fine as long as the lighting is good. RGB jpg files are fine; we will do all necessary colour corrections and pre-press. More is better since it gives us flexibility and more ways to showcase you and your story. Please upload 15-40 photos or images saved as jpg and labelled with your full name.
