Research Capacity Building Workshop Creative and Just Environment and Climate Change Engagement

Date: 5-9 August 2024
At the National University of Laos, Lao PDR

The Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD) of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University in Chiang Mai, Thailand in collaboration with the Faculty of Forest Science, National University of Laos (NUOL) in Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR, and would like to invite the application for the Workshop Creative and Just Environment and Climate Change Engagement to be held during 5-9 August 2024 at the National University of Laos.

The workshop is a part of “Cultivating the Humanities and Social Sciences and Supporting Under-represented Scholars of Asia” led by the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) and supported by SIDA - The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. It aims to support scholars located in economically disadvantaged regions of South and Southeast Asia, particularly junior faculty, graduate students, senior and independent scholars, women, and ethnic minority groups.

The workshop aims to gain insights into interdisciplinary research, including social sciences and humanities, and debates on environmental change, climate change, justice, development, governance, knowledge co-production, and communication in the context of Southeast Asia. The program consists of lectures, group discussions, practical field investigations, and independent study. The workshop will be conducted in English, Lao, and Thai.  We expect around 18-20 participants in the workshop with active engagement among participant

Objectives

1. To enhance comprehension of the interrelationship among climate change, development, justice, creative engagement and communication
2. To enhance interdisciplinary research skills in climate change, development, justice, creative engagement and communication

Applicant's qualifications and application

Applicants from Laos and Thailand who are graduate students, scholars, and researchers. Those who are from NGOs and media, etc. are encouraged to apply. He/she should have the qualifications

● Proficiency in English, both spoken and written.

● Working or having research experience related to climate change,environmental & natural resource management from various disciplines.

Expected outputs from the workshop

The outputs can be a draft research proposal or a paper and other creative forms of communication package. Participants should be committed to attending the full workshop program and submit the workshop-required assignment. Some participants will be selected and funded to participate in the future AAS Symposium to present their work and be exposed to a wider research network. Prior to the workshop, participants are required to read the materials prior to the workshop for an active engagement during the workshop.

Funding support

Travel funding is available for Thai and Lao participants which includes air-ticket/ground transportation, meals, refreshments during the workshop, minimum periderm for those coming from outside Vientiane, and field trip cost.

The statement of purpose

An essay/concept note describing how environmental change and climate change is understood in your local context, what are symptom of (in)justice that resulted to the problems, in what ways do you envision more creative ways of engagement and creative forms of the solution to the problem.
