Open-Source Coastal Eco-synthesis: A Student-Led Poster & Pipeline Forum

Our Mission: Equity Through Open Science

This workshop promotes equity in research by exclusively
showcasing work built on free-tier, open-source ecosystems.
Our objective is to highlight students who achieve high-level
science using free tools like GEE, NASA AppEEARS,
and the Copernicus Database Ecosystem JupyterHub. We
will have a focus of addressing critical gaps in Coastal
Arctic and other critical ecosystems.
This workshop will host posters entirely by students featuring open-source and freeware data access, large data hosting, and LLM-fostered workflows to promote open access for all.
For example, poster topics might include, but are not limited to: synthesizing in-situ measurements with model outputs for coastal study and prediction, using LLM-fostered workflows to process MITgcm outputs / ECCO reanalyses / Oceananigans forward modeling in the Copernicus Database Ecosystem (CDSE), interpreting and processing Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data with Gemini, accessing the free tier on GEE for analysis and study, and accessing HLS in NASA AppEEARS.
About:
Have you recently created an interesting scientific workflow at the coastal ocean margin, using openly available data, freeware servers for large data? Do you have a passion for sharing science?
If so, please share your work at this Open Source Forum! (Physical as well as biological systems at the coastal interface are welcome, as well as those focused on climate, coastal change, or both.)
This forum is designed to be interactive and informal, where the author is encouraged to come to their poster and speak casually with their peers about their specific methods and techniques.

Schedule and Program Changes

Due to scheduling adjustments, this workshop may be shortened to a half-day session on Monday, September 21 (exact times are TBA and will be shared soon).
All submitted conference posters are admitted to this session. However, the final format depends on the time and room space available:
If we have a full-day session: Three workshop poster presenters will be selected to carry out a half-hour workshop focused on their methods and techniques.
If we have a half-day session: The conference poster winners will be invited to contribute to a conference paper, instead of leading an afternoon workshop session.
Host biography:
Rachel Spratt studied Marine Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara where she studied large climate shifts and North Atlantic ocean circulation strength, using the stable isotope delta-O-18 from deep sea cores, as a marker for change. She studied effects of runoff and temperature on interannual patterns in salinity in the coastal Arctic, and temperature and salinity patterns related to density changes in coastal California, as a NASA Postdoctoral Scholar at JPL. She is now a consultant using remote sensing to diagnose groundwater availability in coastal river ecosystems in Southern California.
