IF SO, YOUR PROPERTY COULD BE EXPROPRIATED.
This is not a test. And it could affect you.
The government of Canada has granted the Alto crown corporation funding to build a high speed train from Toronto, through eastern Ontario to Quebec City. It has been deemed to be in the national interest, and with Bill c-15, they will be able to fast track expropriation with no regard to environmental impacts, protected UNESCO standing or peoples’ farms, businesses or their homes.
What is not being discussed nearly enough is the effect this will have on those who were planning to move if this proceeds. The truth is that while the government will pay you "fair market value" for your home, that could be 100s of 1000s less than you might get on the open market. Having seen this happen recently due to the Ontario line, it can happen again.

A growing movement of Toronto and Eastern Ontario residents is sounding the alarm over the federal government’s proposed $90 billion high-speed rail project, which aims to connect Toronto to Quebec City via the Alto crown corporation. Critics warn that under Bill C-15, the government could fast-track the expropriation of thousands of homes, farms, and businesses—including a significant "yellow zone" spanning Eastern Toronto and Scarborough—while bypassing standard environmental protections and UNESCO heritage safeguards.
The plan involves a 300 km/h train secured by unscalable fencing, which opponents argue will physically bisect rural communities, sever vital emergency and school bus routes, and destroy wildlife corridors without providing local stops or economic benefits to the regions it traverses. Citing the astronomical national debt and more urgent needs like healthcare, activists are urging citizens to review potential expropriation maps and sign parliamentary petitions to halt the project before land seizures begin in earnest.
