Iteon report: How do issuers worldwide price their metal card programs?

Metal card programs follow different commercial models, each with its own pricing logic. This global benchmark shows how issuers use metal to generate upgrade revenue, support premium subscriptions or recognize a valuable client relationship.

Customer appetite for metal cards creates a commercial opportunity for issuers. ABI Research identifies their premium feel, status appeal and distinctive design as demand drivers, and describes various customer segments willing to pay more for products aligned with their lifestyles and values. Issuers can translate this demand into a paid physical upgrade or a premium subscription: upgrades generate additional fee revenue, while subscriptions can increase recurring average revenue per user (ARPU). When the offer meets customer expectations and its price covers incremental costs, both sides benefit: the customer gets the metal card she wants, and the issuer earns additional revenue.

Our research identifies two ends of a commercial spectrum:

In the “Metal is the product” model, customers pay for the physical upgrade while account access and benefits remain unchanged. Cash App’s optional USD 50 metal card illustrates this approach. Contribution depends on incremental card revenue and costs.

In the “Metal is the signature” model, metal accompanies a premium package, as with Citi Strata Elite. Benefits underpin the annual fee, while metal provides the quality and prestige expected of these high-end programs.

Other approaches combine elements of these models. Subscription offers such as Revolut Metal, N26 Metal and BoursoBank Metal put the material at the forefront of the proposition, while private-bank programs link card access to the wider client relationship. Apple Card, OneCard and Gemini illustrate another approach, including metal without an annual card fee to support differentiation and customer acquisition.

This 17 pages report surveys 56 metal card programs and product families worldwide, comparing their pricing, benefits and the commercial role of metal.
