Fayoum: Returning to the Source
A restorative yoga & meditation retreat to slow down, reset the nervous system and nourish the soul
19 - 26th of December 2026
This is not the Egypt of crowded pyramids or busy Nile cruises. This is another Egypt — raw, authentic, and unhurried — where the land still holds its ancient rhythm, where locals welcome you with ease, and where time moves the way it did long before tourism arrived.
Fayoum has cast its spell on travellers for millennia. Herodotus visited the region in 460 BC and marvelled at the immensity of Lake Moeris, describing it as one of the great wonders of the ancient world. Strabo followed in 25 BC, writing of the lake's admirable size and the extraordinary engineering that sustained it. Centuries later, Gustave Flaubert travelled through Egypt in 1849 and left behind travel notes full of wonder at a land that seemed to exist outside of time. Today, National Geographic describes Fayoum as a place that "feels like a throwback to another era" — lush fields, water buffalo grazing, egrets nesting — and yet it remains, remarkably, one of Egypt's least-visited and best-kept secrets.
Fayoum sits just two hours from Cairo, yet feels like a different world. Here, farmers still tend Nile-fed canals, potters shape clay by hand, migratory birds cross the sky above ancient lakes, and the desert quietly holds millions of years of history. Many writers, intellectuals, artists and architects who visited never left — drawn in by a beauty that is quiet, patient, and deeply alive.
This retreat is for those travelling from abroad who are ready to step beyond the well-worn tourist trail and into something deeper: a week of restorative yoga, meditation, silence, and land-based exploration that offers not just rest, but a genuine encounter with a place — and with yourself.
☀️ Every Day
Each morning begins with a gentle meditation — breath awareness, body scan, Yoga Nidra-inspired rest — to settle the nervous system and arrive fully in the day. Each evening closes with a long-held, fully supported restorative yoga practice to soften the body, release the day, and restore internal balance.
An important note: the program alternates between active exploration days and quieter, more restful ones. Everything included in the retreat package is optional — there is no obligation to attend anything. Show up for what calls you, skip what doesn't. This week is yours to shape.
Day 1 — Hands in the Earth: Al Nazla Village
We begin the week with slowness. After the morning practice, we visit Al Nazla to witness — and where possible, gently participate in — the patient, creative rhythm of traditional pottery: hands, clay, time, and fire. The process itself becomes a lesson in restoration: shaping without forcing, waiting without rushing. We continue with a quiet walk through the surrounding farmland, reconnecting with Fayoum as a living, breathing landscape — water, soil, food, and community.
Day 2 — Grounding into Time: North Shore of Lake Qaroun
We explore a landscape shaped by ancient quarrying and sacred settlements, where silence, stone, and layered history meet. Nearby, the desert holds a remarkable piece of early engineering: a 4,500-year-old basalt quarry road — widely cited as the oldest surviving paved road in the world. We also walk through a petrified forest, where ancient trees have turned to stone over millions of years — an eloquent reminder that transformation always happens slowly, and that nothing truly disappears.
Day 3 — Rest Day: Integration, Simplicity & Free Time
This day is intentionally left open. After several days of movement and deep sensory input, we invite participants to simply rest and let the nervous system integrate naturally. Wander through Tunis Village, shape clay with a local artisan, sit by the pool, journal, or do nothing at all. There is no agenda, no expectation, no right way to spend the day. Rest here is not passive — it is deeply active integration.
Day 4 — When the Desert Was an Ocean: Wadi Hitan & Wadi Rayan
We travel into the Western Desert for a day of deep time and deep listening. At Wadi Hitan — Whale Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we walk among 40-million-year-old whale fossils in a landscape that was once an ocean floor. The visit unfolds as a walking meditation, with space for silence, rest, and awe. We then continue to Wadi Rayan, where desert lakes and waterfalls offer a luminous contrast between aridity and flow, stillness and movement.
Day 5 — Breath & Birds: Sunrise on Lake Qaroun
We begin the day at sunrise on Lake Qaroun — one of the oldest natural lakes in the world — sailing quietly on the water with an expert ornithological guide as light slowly fills the sky and migratory birds move between continents around us. Back on shore, we gather for a meditative practice and a nourishing breakfast, before a slow and spacious day. In the evening, we come together for a special Christmas Eve dinner, followed by a bonfire in the garden — a space to share reflections, gratitude, and intentions as one year gently closes and another begins.
Day 6 — Integration Day: Resting into What Remains
The retreat closes with a different quality of stillness — one that comes after experience, when nothing more needs to be added. The day is held lightly by a morning meditation and a final evening restorative yoga practice. Between them, time unfolds slowly and entirely on your own terms: a walk through Tunis Village, time by the pool, quiet conversations, or simply watching the light move across the land.
A gentle Yoga retreat - open to all bodies and conditions
The yoga practice at the heart of this retreat is restorative yoga — one of the most accessible and democratic forms of yoga that exists. Suitable for complete beginners, for those living with injuries, chronic pain, or long-term health conditions, it asks nothing of the body except to let go. Through a series of long, deeply supported postures held with the help of props — bolsters, blankets, and cushions — the body is invited into a state of profound rest, without effort or strain. There is no performance, no flexibility required, no right or wrong way to be in a pose. Restorative yoga meets you exactly where you are.
While the yoga practice is set to happen in the afternoon — allowing the body to fully unwind and soften before bedtime — each morning you will be offered a gentle 30-minute meditation to open your heart and set the intention for the day.
A journey of contemplation and slow-paced activities
This retreat will particularly resonate with those who are drawn to stillness — the ones who find meaning in a slow walk through a field, who sketch what catches their eye, who fill journals with observations rather than itineraries. Fayoum's light, its landscapes, and its unhurried pace have long inspired artists, writers, and quiet observers. Here, there is no need to perform the experience. You are simply invited to be present to it — and to let whatever wants to emerge, emerge.
Accomodation & Half Board
Dar Bul Bul - a gem of quiet and beauty is a welcoming and beautifully held guesthouse located in Tunis Village, at the heart of the Fayoum Oasis. Created and lovingly cared for by Sarah and Fadi, the house is designed as a place of ease, warmth, and genuine hospitality — an ideal home base for retreat life. The house is surrounded by open views, gardens, and the gentle movement of village life. Its architecture and interiors combine simplicity with character, creating an atmosphere that feels immediately grounding and familiar. A beautiful garden, pool area, rooftop terrace, and several shared and private spaces allow guests to naturally alternate between moments of connection and quiet time.
At Dar Bul Bul, food is an integral part of the retreat experience. Sarah and Fadi play creatively with traditional northern Egyptian recipes, blending the richness of Cairene gastronomy with the more rural, seasonal flavors of the Egyptian countryside. Dinners are varied, nourishing, and inventive, following the foundations of the Egyptian diet—abundant legumes, vegetables, and leafy greens, warming spices, and modest portions of meat such as duck, pigeon, or chicken. Meals are designed to be grounding and satisfying, supporting both deep rest and quiet pleasure around the shared table.
Christos Fydanis — Yoga Teacher and Thai massage/Spine therapist
Christos is the co-founder of Catis Studio and a certified yoga teacher (E-RYT 250h, Yoga Alliance International India) and therapist in the arts of Thai Nuad Massage and spinal therapy. His classes are warm, multilingual and naturally inclusive — shaped by years of building them around his own practice. A lover of the sea who enters the water in every season of the year and a dedicated mountain trail cyclist, Christos brings that same grounded energy to his teaching.
Christos Fydanis came to restorative yoga through a deeply personal path. When his partner Lisa Fras underwent brain surgery and embarked on a long process of recovery and reeducation, he discovered in this practice something rare — a form of yoga that was genuinely accessible to anyone, regardless of their condition, their history, or their relationship with their body. He began offering restorative yoga at his studio in Crete, where the class quickly became one of the most beloved on the timetable — a welcoming door for those who had never tried yoga before, or who were simply looking for something supported, gentle, and deeply nourishing.
His connection to Egypt runs deep, built through many visits to a country that never stops revealing new layers. Dar Bul Bul, the guesthouse nestled in the heart of Fayoum, has become a place he returns to like home.
Lisa is a core member of the Catis Studio team and the main host of its retreats in Egypt. She lived in Egypt for many years, not as a visitor but through deep immersion — traveling extensively across the country, learning Arabic, understanding local customs, and building trusted relationships that allowed her to discover places far beyond standard tourist routes.Through this long, lived experience, Lisa developed an intimate knowledge of Egypt’s landscapes, cultures, and rhythms.
As a retreat facilitator, she acts as a careful filter, curating journeys that reveal the country’s richness and beauty while avoiding the stress, crowds, and superficiality of mass tourism. Her role is to offer participants a smooth, safe, and meaningful experience, allowing them to encounter Egypt with ease, depth, and authenticity.
