About GO FROM HERE

Go From Here is a new law and policy lab dedicated to catalyzing a bold, affirmative agenda for equality, freedom, and shared prosperity over the next five years. We work toward new rights, legal rules, and governing strategies to shift power to the multiracial working class and make America work for everyone.

Go From Here is fiscally sponsored by Proteus Fund, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity.

We’re looking for dynamic leaders who are excited to help shape this startup project with us. We are open to candidates based anywhere in the United States, with the expectation of periodic travel to Washington, DC. We encourage applicants to apply by October 23, 2026; postings may close earlier based on application volume.

The moment

America’s promise of multiracial democracy is in crisis. The current authoritarian project seeks to restore hierarchies of race, class, gender, and religion. White nationalist and nativist ideas that had been pushed toward the fringes are being encoded into federal policy. At the same time, the civil rights laws are being dismantled and weaponized against Black and brown people and marginalized communities, while deregulation, tax cuts, and cronyism concentrate wealth at the top.

But this moment is also one of historic opportunity. Americans are asking fundamental questions about the role of government, the economy, and how we’ll build a better future. And although the present crisis is profound, it is not without precedent. Our forebears repeatedly fought to transform the country against daunting odds, from the abolition of slavery to the labor uprisings of the 1930s to the civil rights movement. We can and must do so again.

Success will require more than defending existing systems. Too many of our institutions have been failing for years, allowing economic exploitation and systemic discrimination to persist and making it harder for hardworking people to get by, let alone share in the wealth they’ve created for the nation. Our legal protections, meanwhile, have been anemic. In America today, a person can hold equal rights on paper and still be denied health care, housing, a living wage, and a voice in the decisions that shape their life.

We need a transformative agenda that upends rigged systems and builds power for struggling Americans. One that defuses strategic racism and unites Americans around their shared goals of equality, freedom, justice, and prosperity.

Our work

Our name and vision draw inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1967 book, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? In it, Dr. King set forth a sweeping economic vision as the essential next phase of the civil rights movement. He called for an agenda that would end racial subordination and foster cross-racial solidarity around new rights, programs, and structures to deliver material well-being.

Go From Here seeks to advance that vision, with a focus on the governing strategies, rights, and legal structures needed to make this country work for everyone. Operating as an agile and collaborative lab, we partner with advocates, policymakers, academics, organizers, and community leaders to advance innovative ideas for the short and long term.

Our core commitments are to:
      •  Reimagine, not just restore
       •  Center the multiracial working class
       •  Understand racial and economic justice as one fight
       •  Pursue structural reform that shifts power
       •  Advance a welcoming, broad-based movement

We are building a team to drive two interconnected tracks of work:

Governing Power Project: preparing for a future federal governing moment. We are assembling the core building blocks of a comprehensive governing program to advance racial and economic justice when the next major federal policy window opens. Rather than restoring inadequate institutions or aiming for incremental fixes, we seek to advance the structural reforms that shift power toward the multiracial working class and make government work for everyday people.

New Paradigm Project: forging new rights and legal regimes for the 21st century. We partner with allies to incubate the foundational ideas, legal frameworks, and positive rights needed to build a fairer and more just society over the next generation. We bring together legal scholars, policy experts, organizers, and community advocates to co-create transformative legal interventions that can be tested in state and local “laboratories of democracy” and scaled nationally over time.

Our leadership brings decades of experience spanning litigation, nonprofit advocacy, and government service; deep relationships across the social justice ecosystem; and a track record of translating ideas into policy from city hall to the White House. The project has a five-year horizon to catalyze law and policy experimentation.

Director, Governing Power Project

Full-time opportunity

• Drive the development of our 2029 federal governing agenda: Lead GFH’s Governing Power Project, which will center around a policy and governance agenda to unrig America for the multiracial working class. Lead legislative and executive branch policy development, engage with policymakers and coalitions, and build partnerships for listening and narrative research.
• Translate ideas into executable government action: Draw on firsthand experience inside the federal government to drive the development of Day 1 plans for a future government to deliver for the American people and advance racial and economic justice. Bring realism about sequencing, agency design and capacity, enforcement authorities, and interagency process without letting it shrink the ambition.
• Represent Go From Here across the rebuild ecosystem: Participate in coalition meetings and convenings to represent Go From Here among other stakeholders working to shape the next federal governing moment.
• Deepen ties across fields: Build lasting connective tissue across silos, helping to integrate the racial justice, economic, and democracy fields.
• Supervise staff, fellows, and contractors: Lead a small team, providing management and direction, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality written products and convenings.

Qualifications
• 10+ years in law or public policy.
• Experience serving in a senior role at a federal agency or the White House, or as senior congressional staff, including managing people.
• Demonstrated policy expertise on issues of racial and economic justice, and a track record of designing, enacting, or implementing novel public policies or programs.
• Deep relationships and credibility with policymakers, think tanks, and/or movement organizations.
• Experience with campaigns and public messaging is a plus.

Compensation: $180,000–$200,000 annual salary
Reports to: Executive Director

Director, New Paradigm Project

Full-time opportunity

• Drive the development of next-generation rights and legal regimes: Lead GFH’s New Paradigm Project — collaborating with partners to catalyze the foundational ideas, legal frameworks, rights, and duties needed for a fair and just America over the next generation.
• Convene partners: Bring together legal scholars, litigators, organizers, and community advocates for marquee convenings and sustained working groups.
• Drive ideas into action: Collaborate with movement and other partners to turn ideas into statutory and constitutional text and move ideas into action, particularly at the state and local level, drawing on grassroots successes and experimenting with new ideas.
• Advance dedicated portfolios on positive economic rights, artificial intelligence, and other topics: We are exploring enforceable guarantees of housing, health care, collective bargaining rights, and good wages, alongside AI interventions spanning new taxation structures, distributed ownership models, data and privacy rights, and liability regimes.
• Deepen ties across fields: Build lasting connective tissue across silos, helping to integrate the racial justice, economic, and democracy fields.
• Supervise staff, fellows, and contractors: Lead a small team, providing management and direction, and ensuring the production of high-quality written products, policy and legal briefs, and convenings.

Qualifications
• 10+ years legal experience and JD from an ABA-approved law school.
• Experience serving in a senior role in government, think tanks, academia, or policy or advocacy organizations, including managing people.
• Demonstrated expertise in civil rights law or another area of law (e.g., labor, antitrust, consumer protection) with a civil rights lens. Litigation experience in these areas is a plus. Fluency with relevant ideas in legal scholarship, and experience bridging the worlds of academia and practice.
• Deep relationships and credibility with legal scholars, civil rights and economic justice litigators, and/or movement organizers.
• Track record of serving as a trusted convenor is a plus.

Compensation: $180,000–$200,000 annual salary
Reports to: Executive Director

Senior Policy Counsel or Policy Counsel

Full-time opportunity

• Serve as our senior legal architect: Drive the research, conceptualization, and drafting behind new rights frameworks, model legislation, and federal governing ideas across both projects.
• Author high-impact proposals: Write policy briefs, enforcement blueprints, and implementation plans that advance our federal agenda. Write and support partners in drafting proposals, legal analyses, and model legislation that build the intellectual capital for new rights and legal regimes and facilitate their advancement at the state and local levels.
• Think in economic, not just legal, terms: Rights that ignore how markets, firms, and labor operate simply guarantee access into a rigged neoliberal economy. We are looking for a lawyer who is fluent enough in economic analysis to pressure-test whether a proposed right would change material conditions, who can work shoulder to shoulder with our Senior Economist on distributional questions, and who treats a legal remedy’s economic consequences as part of the conceptualization and drafting process.
• Work across both projects: Manage projects supporting both project directors, with day-to-day supervision from the New Paradigm Project Director.

Qualifications
• JD required.
• 3-5 years of legal experience required for policy counsel roles.
• 6+ years of legal experience required for senior policy counsel roles.
• Experience in policy or litigation roles at the federal or state level.
• Capacity to work independently to scope, research, analyze, and write on complex and novel law and policy issues.
• Relationships and credibility with peers at legal and movement organizations.
• Background in law and policy relevant to artificial intelligence is a plus.

Compensation: $125,000–$145,000 annual salary for 3-5 years post-JD
$150,000–$175,000 annual salary for 6-9 years post-JD
$180,000 annual salary for 10+ years post-JD
Reports to: Director, New Paradigm Project

Senior Economist / Economic Policy Strategist

Full-time opportunity

• Design paradigm-shifting economic interventions: Spearhead policy research and development focused on structural economic reforms that center the multiracial working class, including in the areas of worker power, wealth redistribution, and positive economic rights.
• Bridge policy & organizing: Build relationships with labor unions, tenant groups, and community base-builders to ensure economic policy designs are responsive to the lived material needs of the multiracial working class. Co-develop policies with such groups.
• Engage strategic stakeholders: Translate complex economic concepts into clear, compelling narratives and briefings for policymakers, their staff, and coalition partners.
• Think in legal, not just economic, terms: We are looking for an economist who understands how statutes, regulations, and enforcement mechanisms actually operate, who can work shoulder to shoulder with our Senior Policy Counsel to translate an economic design into a legal instrument, and who sees rights and remedies as part of a just economy.
• Work across both projects: Manage projects supporting both project directors, with day-to-day supervision from the Governing Power Project Director.

Qualifications
• 8+ years of experience in economic policy.
• The skills to conduct rigorous economic analysis, including distributional analysis.
• Relationships and credibility with peers at economic policy think tanks and movement organizations.
• A JD or PhD in economics or a related field is welcome, but not required. We are also interested in candidates with applied training in economics, sociology, law or public policy who have built the relevant economic expertise through practice.

Compensation: $150,000–$170,000 annual salary
Reports to: Director, Governing Power Project
