The Motivation game
๐ฎBefore we start playing...
...do you really have a motivation problem?
You probably already have an answer to that.
But is it the right one?
Let's find out.
You decide you're going to get something done. What happens next?
*
A
I think about it. I plan to do it. I might even get everything ready... but actually starting is another matter.
B
I start! ๐ I'm quite good at that bit. It's keeping going that tends to be the problem.
C
I want to do it, but sometimes even thinking about it feels like too much effort.
D
I generally just get on with it. If I've decided to do something, motivation isn't usually the problem.
Think about something you've been putting off. Which sounds most like you?
*
A
I keep telling myself I'll do it later... tomorrow... when I feel more motivated
B
I've already started it. Possibly more than once.
C
It's still sitting there because I just haven't had the energy for it.
D
I can't immediately think of anything important I've been putting off for long.
You get excited about a new idea, project or plan. What usually happens?
*
A
I think about it, research it, maybe make a plan... but actually getting started can take a while.
B
I'm off! ๐ New idea, loads of enthusiasm... then at some point the enthusiasm disappears.
C
I can be genuinely excited about it, but still struggle to find the energy to actually do it.
D
If it's something I genuinely want to do, I'll usually start it and keep going.
What does your to-do list tend to look like?
*
A
Full of things I've been meaning to start.
B
Full of things I've started but haven't finished.
C
I don't even bother with a to-do list anymore because I find it overwhelming to deal with
D
Fairly manageable. Things generally get done sooner or later.
You suddenly get a completely free day. Nothing you HAVE to do. What happens?
*
A
There are loads of things I could do... and somehow I spend half the day deciding where to start.
B
I'll happily start doing something, but somehow end up doing three other things instead.
C
Relief. ๐ฎโ๐จ I finally have a day where I don't have to make myself do anything
D
I'll usually spend at least some of it doing things I enjoy or have wanted to get done.
How often do you rely on a deadline to finally get moving?
*
A
Quite a lot. I can put something off for ages, then suddenly get it done when I HAVE to.
B
Deadlines get me moving, but I struggle more with things that need consistent effort over time.
C
Even a deadline doesn't always help. Sometimes I just don't have enough left in the tank.
D
I like a deadline to keep me motivated. I know I won't miss a deadline.
7. Which of these have you said to yourself most often?
*
A
โWhy can't I just get started?โ
B
โWhy can I never stick to anything?โ
C
โI just don't have the energy.โ
D
None of the above. I just get stuff done if I need to.
