What is your footwork like?

I've been working on the basic steps (skip change of step, slip step, pas de basque, strathspey step and setting step), but I'd like to improve them.

I can dance skip change of step, slip step, pas de basque, strathspey step and setting step well.

I have very neat technical footwork in all steps, including complex steps like Highland Scottische and unusual transitions between steps. I have a good sense of flight and would love to dance with others who can move well. It might be fun to learn some fancy Highland steps!

I know all steps, including complex steps like Highland Schottische, and have mastered unusual transitions between steps. I understand how to do everything well, but my footwork isn't sharp and my sense of flight is medium.

My footwork isn't so great, but I'm more interested in just getting up and dancing.

I find it difficult to dance.

What is your knowledge of formations like?

I know basic formations like Hands Across, Rights and Lefts, and Figures of Eight.

I know medium-level formations like Allemande, Promenade, Ladies' Chain, various reels, Double Triangles.

I know most complex formations including the Bourrel, Tourbillon, Set to and Turn Corners, Knot, Rondel, and want to work on more complex and unusual ones like the Spurtle and Tournee.

I can't do those at the moment. I'd rather explore rock formations.

What about musicality, hands and phrasing?

Not sure what that means...but keen to find out!

I frequently make sure I am covering with other dancers. I divide up phrases to be at the right place at the right time (eg a figure of eight into two-bar chunks). I pay attention to where my hands are in space, and use them to help the set. Or I am currently working on some of these points!

I have learned how to give hands well. I know how to dance in time to a reel, jig or strathspey. I have an understanding of how many bars common formations take.

I have a decent understanding of timing and can use hands well, but at the moment I just want to dance some dances in my set.

Musicality? Can we go to the opera? [disclaimer: we do not have the funds to send you to the opera]

How would you describe your experience level in practice?

I am confident to dance any dance at a ball, even complex or unfamiliar ones, with only a brief. I help others in the set and can recover from mistakes quickly.

I like dancing at social events, but only with an experienced partner - or starting from 4th place!

I am happy with simple dances; I need a walkthrough or to study a dance beforehand. I am not very experienced with balls yet - they can be scary!

I dance most dances at balls, but I don't do the really tricky ones.

I'm not dancing at the moment, but I'd love to spend time with others in the community.
