I take a beat, stand tall, look around the room, and pick where I'm going

My phone is out before I'm through the door

I head straight for the bar or the person I know and get settled

Mostly at my drink, my phone, or anywhere but her

I hold eye contact naturally and break it when I'm thinking, not when I'm nervous

I hold it until it feels like too much, then look away

Probably not a match. It stings for a minute and I move on

I replay everything I said, looking for the mistake

I wait for signals so obvious they never actually come

Directly. I use the word "date" and name a day

I say what I think, calmly, and let it land

I go along with it and replay the moment later
