A Nāgrika x Nagarpedia Initiative
Did you know ବାତ୍ୟା (Batyā) is Cyclone in Odia. Or that there is a term called नौ-तपा (nau-tapa), a traditional nine-day period of intense summer heat, derived from the Hindi words for "nine" (nau) and "heat" (tapa). It is rooted in folklore and marks the sun's transit through the Rohini Nakshatra. And that heatwave is ഉഷ്ണതരംഗം(Ushnatharangam) in Malayalam while sunlight/sunshine is വെയിൽ (Veyil).
Every place has words for the nature around it. For extreme heat. For rains. For the fury of nature.
Words that may never exist together in a dictionary, but are always around us
On World Environment Day, as part of its initiative Nagarpedia, Nāgrika is starting compilation of a dictionary of these words - from cities across India. Words that exist in local languages and dialects that may or may not have an English equivalent. Words that carry a people's relationship with its environment.
