The Designing Environmental and Social Impact (DESI) internship is a paid experience that introduces high school students to architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning through an independent design project rooted in their own communities. By learning from practicing professionals and exploring the environmental and social issues interns gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between people, place, and the built environment. Through this internship, students are introduced to how design can be used as a powerful tool to address community challenges to create meaningful change.
To make this experience successful we work with design practitioners to facilitate the curriculum and mentor our interns through their design process in the following roles:
- Mentor: Meet with an intern biweekly from January 5th to April 17th, in person or virtually, to give them feedback on their design concept.
- Design Lesson Presenter: Engage with the DESI interns by facilitating a design lesson that interest you. Take a look at a few of the ones listed (30 minutes)
- Environmental & Social Impact Lesson Presenter: Introduce the DESI interns to environmental and social issues that exist and the work that is being done to combat them across Greater Boston and surrounding communities (45 minutes)
