Music and Migration: Guided Walk

Our next guided walk of London's Soho is Saturday 19 September 2026

Walk its narrow streets and you’ll hear stories of culture, politics, conflict and power — but also of resilience, invention, community and belonging. For generations, migrants and refugees helped shape Soho’s soundscape, leaving a musical legacy that continues to influence British culture.

On this two hour guided walk, we’ll explore how migration shaped the music of one of the most significant square miles in world music history. From Charles Ignatius Sancho and the first stirrings of Black music in 18th century Britain, to Jewish refugees and Yiddisher Jazz, Soho’s Black diaspora between the wars, Windrush, Lovers Rock, Afrobeat and beyond.

You’ll discover how Soho became a sanctuary for migrants, refugees and other marginalised communities — and how music gave voice to identity, resistance, joy and belonging.

The walk is free. Instead, we ask you to donate directly to Centrepoint, the charity supporting young homeless people. We’ll share donation details on the day.

Everyone joining will receive access to a specially curated playlist in advance, and a full-colour Soho music map on the day.

Wheelchair access is possible, though parts of the route have narrow pavements and may be crowded. We check the route the day before for any access issues. Please let us know in advance about any mobility or access needs.

The walk will start at 2.00pm and last around 2 hours. We will email you details of where to meet and other information a few days beforehand.
