Moving to Portugal: An LGBTQ+ Relocation Story

For people who have already made the move.
Thank you for taking the time to share your story.

I'm a financial planner specializing in cross-border issues, based in Sintra, and I am authoring a book for LGBTQ+ Americans contemplating relocating to Portugal. Most of the guidance available today stops at "Is it safe?" That question matters, but the people who've made the move know it's only the beginning. Was your money ready? Did your marriage, your estate plan, and your family's legal protections hold up across two countries? How did you find healthcare that met your needs, from providers who saw you clearly? And once you unpacked the boxes, how did you find your people?

Very little of what's been written on this subject comes from listening to people who have actually lived it. This questionnaire is my attempt to change that. Your answers will shape the book, so the next person standing where you once stood gets advice built on real experience rather than guesswork. It takes about 15 minutes, and your responses will be kept anonymous, or you can choose whether to be quoted.

This takes about 20 minutes. It's longer than most surveys because the useful parts are the written boxes, not the scales. Skip anything you'd rather not answer — a partly finished response is far more useful to me than none. Please note: The answers are saved in your browser so you can pick up the same copy again. It doesn't follow you to a different copy. So, if someone starts on their phone and finishes on their laptop, or uses an incognito window, they start over. The answers also never reach your account until they hit Submit.

There's an optional section on money. It's marked clearly, and it's the part nobody else asks about. If you're willing, it's the most valuable thing you can give me. How your answers will be used
Your responses are anonymous unless you choose otherwise. I don't ask for your name anywhere except the optional box at the very end.

You choose whether you can be quoted, and how. There's a question about this near the end, and whatever you pick is what I'll do.

Mark any passage [private] if you want it to inform my thinking but never be quoted.

Please don't name other people. Describe them by role — "my lawyer," "a friend from the hiking group" — rather than by name.

Don't include anything you wouldn't want a stranger to read. I'll be careful, but the safest version of that promise is the one you enforce yourself.
Thank you in advance for your time. I would greatly appreciate it if you could send this to your friends as well. The more submissions the better the insights.
Muito Obrigado!
