Producer

We're hiring for a Producer to work full time at Roca.

Company Description

Started by three friends in 2020, Roca is the US’ largest Gen Z-focused news source, with more than 4M followers and subscribers across platforms. Roca's mission is to capture the world without bias or fear. We deliver two types of news:

-Daily news and deep dives that break down current events without spin or fearmongering

-On-the-ground reporting that captures, without bias or fear, how people are living

Role Description Roca is looking for an ambitious, highly organized Producer to help us execute our on-the-ground reporting and get the most out of the content we produce.

Roca travels around the country — and occasionally the world — to tell stories about interesting people, places, and issues. We're looking for someone who can help make those trips happen, identify the people we need to meet, and turn what we capture into content that reaches millions of people across our platforms.

This is a hands-on role. You'll research, make calls, coordinate trips, build relationships, splice videos for different social platforms, and help determine how our content gets distributed across YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and more.

What You'll Do Produce Roca's reporting trips Before we arrive somewhere, you'll help us figure out who we need to meet and make those meetings happen. If we're traveling to a city, community, or event, you'll research notable figures, local leaders, business owners, interesting characters, and others who can help us understand and tell the story. You'll reach out, build relationships, schedule interviews, and make sure we arrive with a strong slate of people to meet. You'll also help identify interesting stories and opportunities that we otherwise might miss.

Own travel logistics You'll coordinate the logistics behind Roca's reporting trips, including flights, hotels, rental cars, schedules, credentials, and other arrangements. Our trips can move quickly and plans can change. We're looking for someone who is exceptionally organized and can keep everything running smoothly while adapting when they don't.

Edit and distribute video content You'll help turn our reporting into content for Roca's different platforms. That means some basic editing and thinking strategically about how a longer piece of content can be repackaged for Facebook, Instagram, and other channels. A 20-minute YouTube documentary might contain dozens of clips, moments, interviews, and stories that can work elsewhere. You'll help identify those opportunities, cut the content, and make sure we're getting as much value as possible out of everything we shoot. You'll also pay attention to what works on different platforms and continually improve how we package and distribute our videos. This is a crucial element of Roca's business.

Who We're Looking For We're looking for someone who is:

-Mission-Aligned. We are fiercely non-partisan. We believe established news outlets are often biased and out-of-touch; influencers are often poorly informed and sensationalist; and cable news networks are hopelessly partisan. Being aligned with this mission is a prerequisite for working at Roca.

-Extremely organized. You'll be coordinating people, travel, schedules, footage, deadlines, and multiple projects at once. You should be able to work in a fast-paced news environment and be willing to work on weekends. -Knowledgeable About Current Events. You’ll be making videos about the most pressing issues, from AI to foreign policy and immigration. You have to know what’s going on, and how to concisely convey the information in video form.

-Curious. You should genuinely enjoy learning about unfamiliar places and people and figuring out what makes a story interesting.

-Resourceful. If there's someone we need to interview, your instinct should be to figure out how to reach them.

-Ambitious. Roca is a growing company with big goals. We want someone who wants responsibility, moves quickly, and is excited to build.

-Nose for good video content. You will slice up videos that have already been created. You do not need to be formally trained in video editing (though previous experience is a plus!), but you must have a nose for good content to help promote our videos across social channels.

-Platform-savvy. You should understand that what works on YouTube may not work on Facebook or Instagram — and know how to adapt content accordingly.

-Willing to learn. You won't have all the answers on day one. You must be willing and able to grow into the role.

-Note: Journalism degree/experience is not required.

-Must be legally eligible to work in the United States and able to relocate to New York City.

The Kind of Person Who Will Thrive
This role is for someone who likes ownership: You won't just be handed a list of interviews to schedule. We'll tell you we're going somewhere, and you'll help figure out who we should talk to and how to get in the room with them. You won't just receive a finished video and upload it to Facebook. You'll think about which moments deserve to become their own videos, how they should be edited, and where they should live.

If you're relentlessly organized, naturally curious, comfortable reaching out to anyone, and excited about what Roca is building, we'd love to hear from you.
