Operator/Brewer, Facility Operations @ Essex 

Role Description: 

The Facility Operator/Brewer plays a key role in supporting the day-to-day functionality, cleanliness, and operational readiness of GALY’s facilities and laboratory environments. This position combines facility support with hands-on brewing and fermentation operations, including assisting with bioreactor and brewery system processes. 

The role focuses on maintaining high standards across shared spaces, supporting operational workflows, and contributing to fermentation-based production activities. 

Working closely with the operations and research teams, the apprentice will help ensure that facilities run smoothly by performing essential tasks ranging from cleaning and organization to assisting in brewing processes, monitoring fermentations, and maintaining production equipment. This role is ideal for someone reliable, hands-on, and eager to gain experience in a dynamic biotech and fermentation environment. No prior laboratory experience is required. Training will be provided. 

Responsibilities: 

Maintain cleanliness and organization across laboratory and facility spaces, including benches, floors, and shared work areas.  

Perform routine cleaning and sanitation of equipment and workspaces following established procedures.  

Support basic facility upkeep tasks, including waste disposal and material handling.  

Assist with monitoring brewery systems and bioreactors, including recording basic parameters (e.g., temperature, volume, or status checks).  

Collect routine samples from bioreactors or related systems following standard procedures.  

Assist with fermentation tracking, including sampling and basic procedures under supervision. 

Label, store, and transport samples to appropriate teams or locations.  

Restock consumables, cleaning supplies, and PPE across facility and lab areas.  

Ensure safety stations (e.g., spill kits, exits, PPE stations) remain stocked and accessible.  

Assist with organizing incoming materials and maintaining storage areas.  

Support equipment readiness by performing simple checks and reporting any issues to the appropriate team.  

Follow all safety guidelines, including proper use of PPE and handling of materials.  

Collaborate with team members to support daily operational needs and maintain workflow efficiency. 

Identify and escalate deviations on fermentation equipment, or equipment performance.  

Assist with material transfer between vessels – using sanitary techniques. 

 

Required Qualifications: 

High school diploma or equivalent.  

Ability to work full-time/part-time (approximately 30-40 hours per week).  

Willingness to work in a hands-on environment involving cleaning, basic equipment handling, and routine operational tasks.  

Ability to follow instructions and adhere to standard operating procedures.  

Strong reliability and consistency in completing assigned tasks.  

Basic comfort with physical tasks (e.g., standing, lifting light materials, moving supplies).
