Manual Handling

Always use the correct technique for lifting and carrying:

Guidelines to follow are:

1.    Do not attempt to lift or carry anything outside your capacity.

2.    Check that there are no slippery or uneven surfaces.

3.    Stand as close to the load as possible.

4.    Get a firm grip and use the palms of your hands not just your fingers.

5.    Bend your knees and keep your back straight.

6.    Use your legs not your back to lift the load.

7.    Keep the load close to your body.

8.    When turning, turn your whole body and move your feet, do not twist.

Safety Procedures for Needles/Syringes

Always use correct tongs for removing rubbish from public areas and bins

Sharps to be put into clearly marked sharps disposal containers

Containers to be placed close to the sharp to minimise handling

1. Squeeze blood from wound, clean.

2. Immediately go to your doctor, or nearest hospital, take the syringe in a sealed container.

Accident/Incident and Hazard Reporting

Hazardous conditions cause accidents, which could result in injury or property damage.

If you notice any hazardous conditions:

1.  Report it to the Operations Manager immediately.

2.  Take the necessary action to deal with the hazard in conjunction with the Operations Manager.

3.  In the event of an accident / incident inform the operations manager immediately and complete the incident / accident near miss form.  Issue a copy of this form.

4. In the event of a serious injury that causes a lost time injury follow the company injury management framework system.

Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are prepared by the manufacturers of chemicals.  No product should be used in the workplace without first obtaining a copy of the SDS.

Electrical Equipment

1.    Electrical equipment and wiring must at all times be assumed to be live and therefore dangerous.

2.    Before using electrical leads, tools or appliances inspect for damage.  Repairs are only to be completed by certified professionals.

3.    All electrical equipment to be checked and tagged every 6 months, and a record of this maintained, in addition notify the NCC office that this has been completed.

If you see any condition, practice or method of working which appears to be dangerous, report it to your Operations Manager or Customer Service Manager immediately.  Complete an "Accident Investigation Report & Form" or form or an "OFI and NCR Form"

1.     Do not use it until it has been repaired.

Hearing Protection

Any loss of hearing caused by excessive noise is permanent.

Housekeeping

Good housekeeping practices shall be observed in all areas:

1.    Keep work areas, aisles, passageways, stairs, escape routes, footpaths, access to fire extinguishers, etc…, free of tools, rubbish and equipment.

2.    Keep work areas clean and tidy.

3.    Keep sinks in cleaner’s cupboard clean – every day!

4.    Only chemicals approved by Northern Contract Cleaning to be used.

Security of Cleaners and Clinet's Premises

It is Northern Contract Cleaning’s duty of care to provide a safe working environment. This includes the safety and protection of cleaners working on sites by themselves.

Personal attacks have occurred within the cleaning industry and we wish to minimise this risk.

1.      Do not enter the site if there is any danger due to People at the entry, or the door / window is broken, or if the alarm is ringing

2.      Enter and close the door before switching the alarm off.

3.      Be cautious if the alarm is not set.

4.      Do not leave doors or windows open when cleaning.

5.      Do not open the door to anyone unless cleared with the Operations Manager – if they do not have a key then they do not have any right to enter.

6.      Set the alarm before opening the door to leave.

7.      Always have a mobile phone with you when cleaning on site, and store your Operations Managers number and the emergency services number (112).

8.      If there is more than one cleaner on site, work in pairs in the same area.
