Avalanche & Backcountry Education with BCA & Hillary Outdoors

5 July at 1:30pm Skyline Cinema, Knoll Ridge Chalet

Thinking about stepping into touring terrain, or looking to build your skills out there?

Join Backcountry Access and Hillary Outdoors up here at Whakapapa for an afternoon focused on avalanche awareness, mountain decision-making and backcountry touring culture. Through presentations, real-world scenarios and community discussion, you'll gain valuable insight into planning trips, assessing terrain and making safer choices in alpine environments.

Designed for anyone interested in exploring beyond the boundary, the session offers an accessible introduction to key backcountry concepts while providing useful refreshers for more experienced mountain users.

BCA will also showcase their latest avalanche and touring safety equipment for the 2026 season, with spot prizes on offer throughout the afternoon.

Hosted in the Skyline Cinema at Knoll Ridge Chalet, the event is free to attend (gondola access required), with attendees encouraged to bring a gold coin donation in support of SARDA, New Zealand’s Search and Rescue Avalanche Dogs.
