The End of NATO? A Joint Discussion with Maoist Communist Union and Communist Youth of Denmark

General information: Friday, April 17th at 6pm
Event description: Join us for a joint discussion between U.S. and Danish communists about the possible end of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)! In the midst of the war on Iran and a tenuous ceasefire that is not likely to bring any kind of lasting “peace” to a highly unstable situation, shifts are taking place in the global geopolitical order unlike anything we have seen in recent decades and we need to understand them. Notable among these is the fracturing of NATO, which was founded in the aftermath of World War II as a means to consolidate the U.S.’s position in Europe and project its power globally. With the massive strategic defeat of the U.S. and Israel against Iran and their allies, the U.S.’s abandonment of its Gulf state allies—who are being bombarded by missile strikes on key infrastructure from Iran—European countries are rethinking their reliance on the U.S. for economic and military support and declining to enter into the quagmire. Dutch politicians said Trump's claims to Greenland were a "wake up call" for the need to strengthen European cooperation. Poland has called for a Europe-only nuclear umbrella. Spain closed bases to the U.S. and sent a diplomatic envoy to Iran. And Italy denied landing rights to U.S. bombers bound for Iran. This pull away from an alliance with the U.S. has been growing for years now. European countries have been remilitarizing in order to secure greater independence and develop "strategic autonomy" from the U.S. and China (although in some cases, seeking closer relations with China over the U.S.). But the chain of events instigated by the war on Iran has accelerated the reordering of the world order. This is a significant development in an era of deepening rivalries and realignment, which will bring about great disorder and present new opportunities to advance the revolutionary movement. It’s imperative that we come together to discuss these events and how to best organize in these conditions.
