All the buddhas have the same enlightened qualities, but depending on their aspiration prayers, their activities are different.
Amitabha’s activity is special because, to be reborn in a pure land and meet any other buddha, you must realize the nature of your mind and arrive at the first bodhisattva level. However, Amitabha made the commitment that even an ordinary person could supplicate him, enter his pure land, and meet him, so practicing Amitabha is our very best choice.
We can also find many practices of Amitabha among the Sutra and Vajrayana texts. One especially blessed and close lineage is called the “Sky Treasury,” discovered by the treasure revealer Namchö Mingyur Dorje.
At the age of 13, he traveled in a vision to the pure land of Amitabha and received these teachings directly from him, so they are very precious and cherished by Tibetan lineages. Namchö Mingyur Dorje gave the lineage of the Sky Treasury texts and their practices to his famous teacher, Karma Chagme, who spread them widely in Tibet.
The empowerment you will receive allows you to do the practice of Amitabha and be reborn in his pure land. It is very special that you are receiving it from Mingyur Rinpoche, as the first Mingyur Dorje and Namchö Mingyur Dorje were contemporaries and, according to a well-known story, their heart-mind were blended as one.
It is said that one day, the first Mingyur Dorje asked his attendant, “How do I look today?”
He answered, “You look absolutely radiant.”
Mingyur Dorje replied, “Today the sky dissolved into the earth.”
It was the day that Namchö Mingyur Dorje passed away in his early twenties. The sky indicated Namchö Mingyur Dorje, and the earth indicated Mingyur Dorje.
All the Tibetan lineages believe that they are of the same heart-mind, so you are incredibly fortunate to receive this empowerment from Mingyur Dorje—it is like receiving it from the treasure revealer Namchö Mingyur Dorje himself.
