We are a friendly, supportive yard, and no prior experience of reward based training is required. We run regular clinics for our owners and their horses, and help and support is always available if needed. Wild Acres is a yard that aims to prioritise horse welfare (including the use of friends, forage and freedom) and the default training method is reward based training (Positive Reinforcement training). As such we are not suitable for owners or riders who wish to train using natural horsemanship techniques, or any system that involves escalating pressure, flooding or fear/ discomfort based methods.

My principles are in line with the above statement and I already train / handle using non aversive methods.

I would like to train and handle my horse in this manner but may need some support.

I am not sure if I train with reward based methods or with pressure and release and would like to discuss this further.

We welcome horses that have not coped in traditional settings or with other training methods and will not turn horses away due to behavioural or handling issues. Many horses arrive here with a long list of behavioural issues which resolve very quickly with a new routine. Please complete the below sections accurately. Good to halter / catch

Good to lead in a regular head coller

Stands quietly tied up

Settles in a stable with other horses nearby

Lifts all four feet easily for daily hoof care

Relaxed and confident with people when being fed

Happy to be handled / groomed all over

Remains unbothered in a stable or paddock if another horse is removed

Mixes well with other horses of the same sex

Mixes well with other horses of the opposite sex

Stands quietly for foot care from a farrier

Stands quietly for veterinary procedures including injections

Loads easily

Stands quietly for clipping if required

Relaxed and confident when being rugged if required

Has shown some issues with being caught/ haltered led or tied up

Has shown some issues with leg handling

Has shown some issues with general handling/ grooming or being rugged up

Has shown some issues with stabling / suffers with separation anxiety

Can be unsettled when another horse leaves

Has shown some issues with the farrier, vet or dentist

Has shown aggression or unpredictable behaviour towards other horses.

Has been known to weave, windsuck, crib bite, wood chew or box / fence walk

My horse is a youngster / feral or mostly unhandled and has not yet been exposed to most of these situations

My horse has a multitude of issues which I need to discuss in person

My horse is generally very straight forward and I am interested in a space because I like the ethos of Wild Acres
