Thank you for your interest in participating as non-food vendor at the 2nd annual Taste of Juneteenth New England Event. This event is a first of its kind in New England outside of Martha’s Vineyard.
-- ABOUT THE HOLIDAY ---
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when the last slaves were freed in Texas – two and a half years after President Lincoln outlawed slavery. Though it didn't become a federal holiday until 2021 and a paid state holiday in Rhode Island until this year (2024). Juneteenth celebrations have a long history in the United States.
--- AFRICAN DIASPORA ---
The term "African Diaspora" refers to the widespread migration of Africans during the Transatlantic Slave Trades from the 16th to the 19th century. Millions from Western and Central Africa were relocated across the Americas and the Caribbean. In their new locations, they encountered diverse local foods and cultural influences, leading to unique culinary styles. The distinct culinary traditions of these regions are a cause for celebration and can be enjoyed by people globally.
--- THE EVENT ---The event aims to showcase foods and food culture from the African Diaspora, and to provide a dedicated platform on Juneteenth for economic opportunity for Black-owned businesses. If you -- as a food business owner-- and/or your food or beverage product aligns with this mission, please apply to participate!
