2026 Summer Research Project - Economics
Are you interested in doing research?
You will be working with Kyel Governor, founder of the GSR Community, on production function estimation. Specifically, we will be replicating a GMM-IV and simulating data to test the results of the estimation.
Sounds very technical? Don't worry! This summer research is a learning opportunity designed to teach you and the project is the hands-on learning activity. You will improve your skills in coding, econometrics, and economic research.
We meet for 2 hours once a week on Wednesday at 4 pm GMT for 6 weeks starting July 8, 2026.
Week 1: You present the research paper.
Week 2: Mathematics and Theory 1
Week 3: Mathematics and Theory 2
Week 4: Coding and Problem Solving 1
Week 5: Coding and Problem Solving 2
Week 6: Present reflection on Summer Research.
We are going to be working on production function estimation with the goal of measuring monopsony in the labour market. Here is the paper of interest:

LaTeX respond to the following and submit your answers as a pdf file.
Copy down these questions to answer later before you submit or visit our website project page.
In the main paper, Monopsony in the Labour Market, reproduce every equation you see in Section 2 Markdown Estimation. That is, the firm's profit maximization problem and equations (1) to (6).
In the main paper, Monopsony in the Labour Market, reproduce all 5 assumptions in Section 2.2 Production function estimation, and also reproduce the three-step process to estimate the production function parameters (also in Section 2.2)
What do you think is the most interesting result in the main paper, Monopsony in the Labour Market, and how does it relate to what's happening in your country?
