Interface Alignment Interventions

What is it?

When we think of software, what we really think are interfaces. The interfaces constrain what we can or can't do with the software.

Software interfaces traditionally used to be rigid & build for scale. Now that AI is eating it — everyone will have a lot of AIs to interact with.

Which means that in principle these interfaces are customizable, but in practice companies & government & even AI can make software predatory far easier / faster than people can make it useful for themselves.

Unless we carefully craft these practices!

What is it not?

❌ You're not expected to create the most shiny tool possible.
❌ This is not a weekend one-&-done style hackathon.

✅ Focus is more on how how you aim to build practices into a user's existing interface.
✅ Spread across ~20 hours in ~3 weeks.

Who is it for?

Think of yourself as a digital wellbeing ✗ tool building coach. However this isn't about credentials — it's for people who can observe carefully and notice nuance. No design or coaching or coding background required.

What is in for you?

If the interventions work - you'd have learned a process on how to reclaim human attention in the AI maze!
However we respect your commitment. There'll be cash prizes for every successful participation & awards for successful interventions.

Who's doing it? How to participate?

We're a bunch of researchers, coaches, generalists working on overlooked AI risks & alignment problems - associated with Groundless.ai.
We have been thinking about this problem for ~3 years. Once you join, you'll have an opportunity to learn what we have discovered so far (via a short course).
You will then be paired with a user across ~3 sessions (you can bring your friends as users).
The focus is spotting where a user tunes out (dis-engages) or gets pulled in against their will (hyper-engages) — and designing a small intervention for it.
