Short-Form Video Editor (Paid Internship)

We're hiring for a Short-Form Video Editor Intern to work full time at Roca.

Company Description

Started by three friends in 2020, Roca is the US’ largest Gen Z-focused news source, with more than 4M followers and subscribers across platforms. Roca's mission is to capture the world without bias or fear. We deliver two types of news:

-Daily news and deep dives that break down current events without spin or fearmongering

-On-the-ground reporting that captures, without bias or fear, how people are living

Role Description

You'll cut up and edit reels for Roca’s social media platforms. The job: You’ll turn the footage filmed by other Roca staff into great short-form content for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and X. You will also assist with in-studio shooting of news reels, ads, and other content as needed.

You'll be spearheading the company’s short-form strategy – deciding which segments of videos to cut up and analyzing what content does well across different platforms. We are looking for people who obsess over doing great work.

Technical Qualifications

-Excellent understanding of pacing, timing, and retention to keep viewers watching

-Experience editing and managing short-form video on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, or other social media accounts. Familiarity with YouTube Studio is a plus

-Ability to independently shoot high-quality video in the field and in controlled settings is a plus

-Familiarity with microphones, recorders, and basic audio mixing

Who We're Looking For We're looking for someone who is:

-Experienced in content creation or video production.

-Nose for good video content. Being able to select the best bits of footage and segments of a conversation is critical to making a successful reel. Must have strong editorial judgment.

-Extremely organized. You'll be coordinating footage, deadlines, and multiple projects at once. You should be able to work in a fast-paced news environment making same-day reels and be willing to work on weekends.

-Knowledgeable About Current Events. You’ll be making videos about the most pressing issues, from AI to foreign policy and immigration. You have to know what’s going on and how to concisely convey the information in video form.

-Curious. You should genuinely enjoy learning about unfamiliar places and people and figuring out what makes a story interesting.

-Ambitious. Roca is a growing company with big goals. We want someone who wants responsibility, moves quickly, and is excited to build.

-Mission-Aligned. We are fiercely non-partisan. We believe established news outlets are often biased and out-of-touch; influencers are often poorly informed and sensationalist; and cable news networks are hopelessly partisan. Being aligned with this mission is a prerequisite for working at Roca.

-Detail-oriented. You should have strong attention to detail, particularly for on-screen text, statistics, names, fact-checking, and captions.

-Willing to learn. You won't have all the answers on day one. You must be willing and able to grow into the role.

-Note: Journalism degree/experience is not required.

-Must be legally eligible to work in the United States and able to relocate to New York City.

Location This is a full-time, fully in-person position based out of Roca’s office in New York City.

Salary Note: This is a two-month paid internship at $5,000 per month that leads directly to a full-time role for strong performers.

Our intention is for this to become a full-time position. We’re using the two-month period as an opportunity for both sides to make sure the role is a strong fit. If you perform well, demonstrate that you can take ownership of the responsibilities listed, and prove to be a strong fit with the Roca team and mission, we expect to offer you a full-time position at the end of the internship.

Compensation for the full-time role will be negotiated at that point based on experience and performance, and the package may include equity in RocaNews.

We’re looking for someone who wants more than a short-term internship. Ideally, you’re excited about the opportunity to grow with Roca, take on increasing responsibility, and become a core member of our team.
