Scripture Memorization Guide

A message from Pastor Eli: Memorizing Scripture takes time, but that's part of the benefit and goodness of memorization. Work at your own pace and don't be discouraged if you don't make it through the whole passage. Select any of the exercises which best suit your individual learning style.

Scripture memorization is not about pressure, but delight. We want to savor God's word, which is why we are setting aside time to memorize it and meditate upon it. So enjoy the journey, and let your heart delight in what the Lord says!

1. Recite Deuteronomy 6:4-6 out loud, and try listening to an audio version or recording of yourself.

2. To memorize the whole passage, repeat each verse, one at a time, until fully memorized. Write or type as many times as needed.

3. Complete the verses.

Deuteronomy 6:4
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our __________, the __________ is one.

5. Take a moment to pray or hand write this passage back to the Lord, using your own words or another bible translation such as NLT, MSG, NIRV, ERV, CSB, and EASY.

6. Reflection:
Why does this command begin with the command to "hear"?
What is the connection between hearing and loving?
Do you think the order matters?
Must we first listen to the truth about God before we can love God? What can we do in our walk with God to love Him with all our heart?
