Mozilla just released a report that shows open-source AI is no longer far behind the frontier.
The average capability gap between the best open and closed models is now just 3.3%, down from over 8% in early 2024. For coding, instruction following, and general knowledge, open models are already at or near parity. Closed models still lead in reasoning, long-context tasks, and agentic workflows.
